Check Out Mx Puja Singh’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mx Puja Singh.

Hi Mx Puja , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in vancouver, bc (canada) to working class parents (punjabi mom + canadian dad) with one older brother. i’ve always been creative, musical, curious, expressive and caring. my parents say i started singing before i could speak and if there was an instrument around, i would try and play it. i was in musical theatre and elementary and middle school in canada and then i moved to southern california in my early teens (w my mom) and did chorus, band, colorguard and dance team in high school. i got interested in fashion and ended up going to fidm (fashion institute of design and merchandising) in dtla. after college i started my own line of jewelry and did that for a handful of years.

then in my mid 20s, i started practicing yoga and around the same time also started writing and producing music. and for the past decade and a bit, i’ve been developing and honing my skills of singing, writing, producing, playing instruments, performing, teaching and all of the other skills that go along w those things.

in september 2024, i released my debut full length album, COSMIC EMOTIONS, a journey of self discovery w influences from techno, house, indian classical and devotional music, folk, pop, rock, etc. i wrote, recorded and produced this album all by myself and it took over 4 years to make (almost scrapping it multiple times) but i’m so proud of it and so happy that it’s out in the world.

for the past 7+ years, i have been studying indian classical and devotional music (in some ways trying to connect w my south asian roots) and recently did a performance (w 5 other musicians) at the philosophical research society in los feliz showcasing this work.

now i am moving into a new chapter and started to work on my second album! i recently started playing the electric bass and trying to get better at guitar so we’ll see where these sounds lead me. =)

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
i have to say the biggest struggle has been my own mind. the doubt, the (overly intense) self criticism, the unnecessary boxes and boundaries that i place myself in. also systemic struggles of capitalism and patriarchy and a government that wants to spend our money on k*lling people instead of supporting it’s own people. the music industry is in a crazy place now (i guess when hasn’t it been) and in one way, there’s more access than ever, and yet somehow it’s harder than ever to actually reach people and connect with them and get paid for all of the work we do as artists!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
i am a queer, nonbinary, indian canadian immigrant from canada living on turtle island. i have explored many different styles and genres and feelings of music and i will probably continue to explore. my life is all about liberation, freedom of expression, enjoying and living life to the fullest (as resistance to the empire). i think this world is so beautiful (and also disgusting and terrifying) and i want to know what it means to actually live life. i care about people and plants and animals and the earth! all of these things inform how and why i create what i create. my music is a reflection of my life and it’s about connections. it’s about community. it’s about seeing things in new ways and hopefully helping others to see things and feel things in new ways.

i hope people feel cared for with my work. whether you listen to my songs or watch my videos or come to a class or a workshop or a show, i hope that you feel cared for. i hope that you feel seen. and i hope that you feel loved.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
the way that i care about people. whether it’s fans, followers, friends, people i work with, etc, i want people to feel cared for, like they matter.
