Daily Inspiration: Meet Chris Merrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Merrell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born and raised on a 12-horse ranch in Woodcrest, California, Chris grew up learning how to train horses from his dad, catching crawdads in the creek, and ripping dirt bikes through the orange groves. He snuck his dad’s guitar from a closet in the eighth grade and taught himself how to play, sing, and eventually produce music. What started on that old guitar turned into a full-fledged career. He’s spent the last twelve years as a professional music producer mastering everything from hip hop to pop to orchestral before finding his home in country music.

Chris planted his flag as a full-time country artist in November 2024, building a locked-in band with traditional instrumentation including pedal steel guitar. His high-energy live shows are powered by real crowd connection and sheer charisma have a mix of honky-tonk heart with California edge. He’s been turning heads with singles like Bad Day to Be a Beer and YZ250, both self-produced, with more music releasing every month.

In July 2025, he became the first-ever featured musician in Visit Riverside, his hometown’s tourism publication. Now, he’s fast gaining a reputation as the Cali country savant: a self-made songwriter-producer-artist leading the charge for a new generation of West Coast country music.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest obstacles has been honing my craft. As a singer I was tone deaf all throughout my teenage and early adulthood.

Some folks are born with loads of natural talent. Admittedly I did learn instrumental music very quickly growing up. But every inch of ground that I’ve gained in vocal skill has been hard fought and slowly won.

Today, my biggest challenge is adjusting to the full-time gigging lifestyle. It’s a ride for sure, the highs and lows have more amplitude. It’s often not a physically demanding job but after most weekends I spend Monday sleeping and recovering my energy. You bare your soul and songs to hundreds and thousands of people–it’s wild.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for my particular brand of country music and the energy I bring when I perform it onstage. I grew up on 90’s country artists like Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, et al. The fabric of that music is intertwined with the songs I write,

I think there’s a new crop of country singers that are interested in that sound and I hear a lot of new songs coming out that I consider archetypal of the genre! What I’m proud of and what differentiates me is that I solo write most of my songs, and my lyrics are truly about my life experiences and filled with artistic nuance. Even with the fun songs I try to add vulnerability, even one line that lets the listener in to my psyche.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I use the notes app and voice memo app like a madman! always writing and recording little ideas!
