Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Catalan.
Hi Maria , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Magnetic Moods honestly came together very naturally. We’re sisters-in-law, and although we came from slightly different creative backgrounds, we realized pretty quickly that our skills complemented each other really well. Cassie has extensive experience in event planning and production, while Maria has always been drawn to design and creative direction in different forms.
The idea for Magnetic Moods really started to take shape while we were planning and designing Maria’s wedding in the Palisades together. Throughout the process, we kept noticing how naturally we worked as a team. We both became really involved in every aspect of the experience, from the planning and logistics to the atmosphere, design details, and overall feeling of the day. Our strengths complemented each other and our work felt very balanced and intuitive from the start.
Our guests responded really strongly to the overall experience, and it sparked the realization that this was something we genuinely loved doing together. What started as helping bring celebrations to life for friends and family slowly evolved into Magnetic Moods and a shared vision for creating refined, thoughtful experiences for weddings, proposals, and special occasions. At the heart of it all, we simply love helping people create moments that feel beautiful, personal, and true to them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like most creative businesses, there have definitely been moments of uncertainty, trial and error, and learning as we go. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the creative side of the business with everything happening behind the scenes. People often see the beautiful end result of an event, but there’s so much coordination, problem-solving, communication, and emotional energy that goes into creating an experience that feels effortless for the client.
Another challenge has been building something in a very visual and competitive industry while still trying to stay true to our own style and values. There can be a lot of pressure to constantly follow trends or do things a certain way, but we’ve really tried to focus on creating experiences that feel authentic to us and to the couples and clients we work with.
We’ve also both balanced Magnetic Moods alongside other responsibilities and careers as we’ve grown the business, so there have definitely been long nights, sacrifices, and periods where we’ve had to trust the process!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Magnetic Moods?
Magnetic Moods is centered around creating intentional, elevated experiences for weddings, proposals, and special occasions. We focus heavily on atmosphere, from the design details to the overall flow and energy of an event. Our design approach leans very intentional and minimal. We’re drawn to impactful details that transform a space without making it feel overwhelming or overdesigned. We love creating environments where each element has purpose and guests can really connect with the atmosphere around them.
We’re probably most known for our candlelit installations and romantic styling. Candlelight has become such a signature part of our work because of how transformative and timeless it is.
What sets us apart is how personal our approach is. We care deeply about creating experiences that reflect the people we’re designing for, not just something that looks beautiful in photos.
What we’re most proud of is that Magnetic Moods has grown very organically through relationships and word of mouth while staying true to our style and values.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Living and working in Los Angeles has been really inspiring creatively because there’s such a wide mix of styles, cultures, venues, and people here. You can create something intimate and coastal one weekend, then something modern and editorial the next. There’s also a strong appreciation here for atmosphere, design, and experiences, which aligns really naturally with the kind of work we love to do.
At the same time, LA can definitely feel very fast-paced and oversaturated at times, especially in creative industries. It’s easy to get caught up in trends, comparison, or the pressure to constantly produce more. We’ve learned how important it is to stay grounded in our own style and approach rather than chasing what everyone else is doing.
