Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Bellas.
Hi Kim , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
⸻
Kim Bellas, founder of Sober is the New Cool.
Thirteen years ago, my journey began with love. I made a promise to show up differently for my son, Matthew, myself, and the life I wanted to create from the heart. What started as a personal choice became something much bigger than I ever imagined.
Today, Sober is the New Cool is a global wellness movement rooted in connection and truth. We’ve walked together across countries. We’ve gathered in New York City for the White Party. We’ve held white hearts in our hands as a reminder that no one is alone.
The White Heart Initiative was created to remind people of something simple and deeply human: I am truly glad you exist.
From Montreal to over 38 countries, this is what happens when people choose connection over silence. This isn’t about perfection — it’s about showing up for each other exactly as we are.
One heart can change a moment, many hearts can change the world. 🤍
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
⸻
Has it been a smooth road? No, it hasn’t.
Thirteen years ago, I started Sober is the New Cool as a one-woman voice, speaking into a space where very few people were talking about it. At the time, choosing not to drink still came with a lot of misunderstanding. People questioned it, judged it, or assumed something was wrong.
One of the biggest obstacles was simply getting people to listen — and helping shift the idea that if someone doesn’t drink, there must be a reason tied to shame or struggle. When really, for many people, it’s about health, choice, medical reasons, or simply wanting to feel better in their own lives.
I also had to challenge the deeper belief that people are not enough as they are. So many of the patterns we see come from that place — people trying to fit in, trying to cope, trying to feel accepted. My message has always been that you are already enough, exactly as you are.
In the beginning, it was not easy being one voice in a world that didn’t always understand or want to talk about it. But something beautiful happened — people started to respond. They started to open up. They started to say, “me too,” or “I don’t drink either,” or “I’ve never felt comfortable with it either.” And slowly, the silence began to break.
That’s when it turned into something bigger than me. A community started forming — people wanting connection, honesty, and a place where they could just be themselves without judgment.
From there, Sober is the New Cool grew into a global wellness movement, and the White Heart Initiative became a symbol of that message: one heart can change a moment, and many hearts can change the world.
At its core, this has always been about helping people feel seen, supported, and like they truly matter. 🤍
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My professional life has grown from a one-woman message into a global wellness movement.
Sober is the New Cool started as something deeply personal and has evolved into a purpose-driven brand with merchandise that gives back — where proceeds go directly into supporting the community and growing the movement.
A big part of my work is the White Heart Initiative. Through donations, we are able to place white hearts directly into people’s hands, or send them to ambassadors of Sober is the New Cool who share them at colleges, events, and on the streets in different parts of the world. It’s a simple act, but a powerful reminder that people are seen, valued, and not alone.
I’ve also shared this message through over 150 podcast interviews internationally, along with magazine features and media coverage.
On the ground, this work comes to life through events like the International Recovery Walk and the White Party in New York City, where people come together in community, connection, and hope.
Everything I do is centered on one goal — helping people feel like they matter and building a global community rooted in kindness and connection. 🤍
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
⸻
The most important lesson I’ve learned along this journey is pretty simple, but it’s everything.
In a world of eight billion people, I’ve come to realize how lucky I am for the people I’ve met along the way. The connections, the conversations, the moments where someone trusts you enough to share their story, their heartache, their fears — that’s not something I ever take for granted.
I thought I was good at communication before, but this journey has made me better. More present. More open. More human.
I’ve learned that spreading love and spreading hope really does matter. And that giving to others is actually the biggest gift you can give to yourself.
When people believe in you enough to open up, it changes you. It humbles you. And it reminds you that underneath everything, we are all just trying to feel understood and supported.
Through it all, I’ve felt incredibly grateful — for the trust people place in me, and for the chance to be part of their story, even in a small way.
