Check Out Erika Villegas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Villegas.

Hi Erika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a self-taught artist, and my journey with art started at a really young age. Growing up, I was always drawn to creating it was something that came naturally to me. I didn’t overthink it back then; I just knew I loved art and the way it made me feel. It became a constant in my life, something I could always return to no matter what was going on around me.

As I got older, that early passion grew into something more meaningful. I am also a special needs mom, and that experience has deeply shaped both my life and my work. Balancing motherhood and creativity hasn’t always been easy, but it’s given my art a deeper sense of purpose. It’s taught me patience, resilience, and how to find beauty and meaning even in the most challenging moments.

Without formal training, I’ve built my path through experimentation—learning as I go, making mistakes, and growing from them. That process has helped me develop not just my skills, but my voice as an artist. I’ve learned to trust my instincts and create in a way that feels honest to who I am.

My work is rooted in acrylic painting and fluorescent black light, but I’m a mixed media artist at heart. I use oil, watercolor, spray paint, and other materials depending on what the piece calls for. I don’t like to limit myself to one medium each one brings a different energy, texture, and emotion. Combining them allows me to create work that feels layered, immersive, and alive.

Every piece I create carries its own story and its own experience. No two works are the same, because each one reflects a different moment, emotion, or perspective in my life. That’s what keeps the process so meaningful to me it’s always evolving and deeply personal.

There have been moments of doubt along the way, especially while balancing everything that comes with being both an artist and a mother. But being self-taught has also given me the freedom to grow without limitations. A major turning point for me was fully embracing experimentation, especially incorporating fluorescent light into my work. That shift allowed me to create pieces that feel more expressive, vibrant, and true to my vision.

Today, I see my art as an ongoing evolution. What started as something I loved as a child has grown into a powerful outlet for expression, healing, and connection. My journey as both a self-taught artist and a special needs mom continues to shape everything I create.

Looking back, I’m grateful I held onto that passion. Every challenge, every lesson, and every moment has helped shape my path. I’m still growing, still exploring, and still telling new stories one piece at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Along the way, I’ve faced real challenges that come with pursuing art, especially independently. From vendor fees at markets to artist fees for galleries and art shows, there are financial barriers that aren’t always talked about. I’ve had to take risks, invest in myself, and keep showing up even when the outcome wasn’t guaranteed.

I’ve also experienced artist block and life challenges that made it difficult to stay consistent or feel inspired. There were moments where everything felt overwhelming, and creating didn’t come as easily as it once did. But those periods taught me just as much as the productive ones—they pushed me to be patient with myself and reminded me why I started in the first place.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a self-taught mixed media artist specializing in acrylic painting and fluorescent light, along with oil, watercolor, spray paint, and other materials. My work is known for its luminous, radiant quality, bold use of bright colors, and layered, emotionally driven compositions—each piece carrying its own story and experience.

What sets me apart is my experimental approach and the way I combine mediums to create immersive, energetic work that feels alive. I don’t limit myself to one style, which allows my practice to stay fluid, evolving, and deeply personal.

I’m most proud of continuing to create and grow through life challenges, including balancing motherhood as a special needs mom, overcoming artist block, and navigating the financial realities of being an independent artist. Through it all, I’ve stayed committed to showing up for my work and trusting my creative voice.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
see risk-taking as a necessary part of growth, especially as an artist. Being self-taught, I’ve had to trust my instincts and take chances without always knowing the outcome. A lot of my journey has been about stepping into the unknown and learning as I go.

One of the biggest risks I’ve taken is investing in myself—whether that’s paying vendor fees, participating in art shows, or putting my work out there without guarantees. Financially and emotionally, that can be challenging, especially while balancing life as a special needs mom. There’s always a level of uncertainty, but I’ve learned that those risks are often what open the door to new opportunities.

Creatively, I take risks by experimenting with different mediums and pushing my work beyond traditional boundaries. Incorporating fluorescent light and combining materials like acrylic, oil, watercolor, and spray paint was a step into something unfamiliar, but it helped me develop a style that feels true to me—luminous, radiant, and full of energy.

I don’t see risk as something to avoid, but as something to move through. Even during moments of artist block or life challenges, I’ve continued to show up and trust the process. For me, growth comes from being willing to take those chances, even when it feels uncomfortable.
