Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with David Russell of Westchester/ LAX

We recently had the chance to connect with David Russell and have shared our conversation below.

David, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I meditate, drink coffee and play the New York Times games- Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is David Russell. I am the co-founder of the Mobile Mural Lab. The Mobile Mural Lab began in 2011 as a mobile arts studio offering collaborations in mural production, art education, and community engagement throughout L.A. and beyond. The Mobile Mural Lab continues to collaborate with artists, organizations, and cultural institutions to produce large-scale murals and interactive painting experiences. Our creative process is always context-driven and aims to involve clients in the conceptual phase of design to create public works that reflect the identities of the communities they serve. We have over 30 years of mural painting experience and use a range of materials, including oil, acrylic, enamel, and aerosol.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father instilled a strong work ethic and a disciplined lifestyle as I grew up on a horse/ cattle ranch in the mountains of Colorado. Before going to school, I woke up at dawn to take care of our animals. This included baling hay, chopping ice in water vats, and shoveling horse manure. Later in life, I worked in commercial construction to pay off my student loan after attaining my M.F.A. These manual labor experiences really shaped my work ethic, discipline, and commitment to completing tasks, no matter how difficult they may be.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the biggest wounds in my life was losing my younger sibling when I was 18. I learned that life is not only precious, but a gift. This mindset continues to inspire my daily outlook by taking advantage of every day with positivity and love. I strive to make the most of my time by doing my best, being as productive as possible, helping others, and having as many adventures as possible, including rock climbing expeditions, surfing trips, and long bike rides.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
One truth that has become a foundation in my life is the fact that nothing ever stays the same. Everything changes. Through that realization, I try to be present in a particular moment without developing an attachment to the pleasant times and not developing aversion to the difficult times.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m surrounded by nature, and it’s quiet.
