Daily Inspiration: Meet Isha Agrawal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isha Agrawal.

Hi Isha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was 10 years old, I attended a summer camp in Pasadena where I learned a mathematical card trick. After showing it to one of my teachers, she freaked out and was completely mind blown. I was surprised for a silly little card trick to make someone feel this amount of excitement and wonder. Eventually, I started showing this teacher card tricks, which I learned on YouTube, every day. This was right before the pandemic hit. During quarantine I devoted all of my time to study the art of magic. I learned as many card tricks as I could. I got an online mentor who helped me learn new skills and techniques, and eventually, at 13 years old, my mentor recommended auditioning for the Magic Castle’s Junior Program. I had never heard of a place like that before, but I was excited. I prepared for months on end before auditioning for junior membership at the prestigious Magic Castle. When I received my acceptance letter, I broke down in tears due to the emotional overload of being an official member of one of the most private magic clubs in the world.

For the past 4 years, while I’ve been a member of this program, I’ve not only grown as a performer and magician, but also as a person. Upon first entering the program, I was a painfully shy 13 year old girl who didn’t have many friends, and was just purely excited to be there. Now, at 17 years old, I’m performing on the main stage of the Palace of Mystery at the Magic Castle and have performed for countless of private events across Los Angeles. Looking forward, the excitement I feel about pursuing a career in magic is immeasurable. I envision being a full-time magician and spreading the joy of magic to people who’s never experienced live entertainment in that capacity.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey in the magic community has been a deeply supportive and encouraging one so far. As a young woman of color in a male-dominated, performance-based field, I’ve found it meaningful to reflect on my role and to thoughtfully choose the people and communities I surround myself with. As a high school student, balancing school and my passion for magic can be challenging at times, but it also motivates me to keep growing, performing, and developing new acts.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a magician, and I specialize in stage, close up, and walk-around magic. I’m known for performing at the Magic Castle’s Palace of Mystery and various other private events. I’m most proud of my overall growth as a magician, from being so painfully shy to enjoying all the time I can get on stage. I think what sets me apart from other magicians is the level of connection I attempt to incorporate into my show. I aspire to truly get to know my audience and make the magic about them. My main goal whenever I perform is to meet new, interesting people and get to know them on a level that most magicians don’t.

What’s next?
I really hope to go full-time with my magic career in the future, and I truly cannot see myself doing anything else. Since I’ve lived and grown up in LA my whole life, I’m looking forward to going to college in Chicago where the magic scene is really big right now. I’m excited to start performing more while I’m in college, and hopefully have more time to focus on magic.
