Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In January 2019, I had the privilege of meeting two incredible business owners, Nahom and Abel. They managed an event hall space called Habesha Hookah Lounge in the West Pico area of Los Angeles, and they brought me on to clean and prepare the venue for their clients’ events. My role involved maintaining the space and handling furniture setup and breakdown. Over time, they became mentors to me in ways they may not even realize.
While working with them, I gained valuable experience not only in cleaning but also in business operations and management. Each day brought new lessons. As the number of events grew and schedules became tighter, I found it increasingly difficult to keep up on my own. What initially felt like a challenge turned into an opportunity—I was pushed to seek help, which marked the beginning of growing my small business.
As my team and I worked throughout the block, other local businesses began to notice our efforts. They saw us maintaining the hall, cleaning windows, and keeping storefronts presentable, and soon started asking about our services. Things progressed quickly. Word spread, and by the end of 2019, we were servicing nearly the entire block. It was then I realized how lucrative this business could be for me! I felt proud and fulfilled, seeing this cleaning venture turn into something meaningful.
Our team continued to expand, and just when I thought the business was peaking , COVID-19 propelled me even further. In January 2020, I made the decision to officially establish Wholy Clean LLC, ensuring we were fully compliant, insured, and properly licensed to operate in Los Angeles. I had more requests than ever before. As businesses switched to primarily online business, they suddenly needed storage areas cleaned. Cleanliness became the forefront of people’s minds, and my team and I were there to provide not only the cleaning but also a valuable peace of mind in a time when people needed it most. I not only had a growing business, I had a real sense of purpose.
Today, Wholy Clean continues to serve many of the same clients who have been with us since the beginning. It means a great deal to me to carry forward the mentorship and lessons I received early on, while also providing a service that positively impacts our community—creating cleaner, healthier spaces and leaving every place better than we found it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced over the years has been finding the right team to consistently deliver high-quality service. For the most part, I had to learn how to build and refine a clear blueprint for operating the Wholy Clean system. In the beginning, things felt manageable because I was present at nearly every job, overseeing the work and providing guidance. But as the business expanded, I had to learn how to delegate and trust that my team could handle responsibilities without me being on-site.
That shift pushed me to develop structured procedures and detailed checklists to ensure everything runs smoothly, even in my absence. Along the way, I’ve found a real passion in supporting my team—empowering them, creating opportunities for stable, well-compensated work, and offering incentives. It’s also rewarding to see them recognized by our clients, especially when they receive tips for their hard work.
