Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Hussain.
Hi Sara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m currently building Raíz Studio, a design-led metal home décor brand rooted in manufacturing intelligence and global standards.
While the business is rooted in India, my exposure has largely been shaped by working closely with international markets. For over four decades, my family has been involved in export manufacturing, producing for global brands across the U.S. and Europe. Growing up around that environment, I saw firsthand how Indian manufacturing is deeply trusted for its capability, but rarely represented through its own brand identity. Over time, I began to see a disconnect between how products are made for global markets and how they are often presented. Raíz Studio emerged from that observation.
The idea was to build a brand that brings together design clarity and manufacturing depth from the outset. Where products are not just aesthetically considered, but also engineered to be consistent, scalable, and export-ready. Rather than launching wide, we’ve started with a focused range of limited-edition candle holders, designed and produced in small batches with close attention to finish, proportion, and repeatability.
We’re currently in the early stages of building out our U.S. wholesale presence, working towards positioning Raíz as a globally relevant brand that represents Indian metal craftsmanship through systems, design intelligence, and long-term thinking.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but most of the challenges have been structural rather than dramatic.
One of the biggest shifts has been moving from a manufacturing environment, where the focus is execution and consistency, to building a brand, where clarity of positioning and restraint matter just as much. In manufacturing, you respond to a brief. With Raíz, we are defining the brief ourselves, which requires a different kind of discipline.
Another challenge has been being intentional about scale. It is easy to expand quickly across categories,
especially in home décor, but we have chosen to start narrow and build slowly. That often means deciding what not to do, whether it is limiting the product range, holding back launches, or spending more time refining details than expected.
There is also the operational side of entering global markets independently. While we are familiar with export systems, building a brand that stands on its own in those markets, especially in the U.S. wholesale space, requires a different level of readiness. Everything from pricing and packaging to communication and consistency has to be considered early.
More than anything, the challenge has been maintaining coherence while building something new. Making sure that design, production, and positioning are aligned from the beginning is not always easy, but it is necessary.
It is a slower process, but a deliberate one.
We’ve been impressed with Raíz Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Raíz Studio is a design-led home décor brand focused on metal objects, built on a foundation of manufacturing experience and operational clarity.
At its core, the brand brings together two things that are often treated separately. On one side, there is deep-rooted production knowledge developed over decades of working with international markets. On the other, there is a considered approach to design, where form, proportion, and material are resolved with intention rather than driven by trends.
We specialize in small-batch, limited-edition pieces, starting with candle holders. The idea is to build slowly and deliberately, focusing on products that can be made consistently at a high standard, rather than expanding quickly across categories. Each piece is developed with close attention to finish, balance, and repeatability, so that what is designed can actually be produced without compromise.
What sets Raíz apart is this emphasis on coherence. Design decisions are made alongside manufacturing realities, not after. Materials are chosen for how they behave in production, not just how they look. Systems and processes are built early, so quality does not depend on constant intervention.
We are also building the brand with a global perspective from the outset. While based in India, our focus is on international wholesale markets, particularly in the U.S., where there is a strong appreciation for well-made, design-forward home objects. The goal is to represent Indian manufacturing capability through a clear, contemporary lens, without relying on nostalgia or surface storytelling.
What I am most proud of, at this stage, is the restraint. Choosing to start with a tight range, taking time to refine details, and building a foundation that can scale without losing integrity. It is not the fastest route, but it is the one that feels sustainable.
For readers, the simplest way to understand Raíz is this: it is a brand built on systems, not just aesthetics. The intention is to create objects that feel considered, are made well, and can hold their place over time.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Some of my earliest memories are of spending time around the production facilities during school winter break. It was always active, with different things happening at once, but as a child I didn’t think much of it.
I remember riding a bicycle across the floor with my siblings, taking turns and moving through different sections as we went. You would pass one area where something was being shaped, then another where it was being finished or packed. At the time it just felt like something to do, not something to observe.
Looking back, that’s probably where my understanding of how things are made started. It wasn’t taught, it was just around.
