Inspiring Conversations with Kie Low of Mils and Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kie Low.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a mother of two now, and that journey continues to shape me both in motherhood and entrepreneurship.

I spent 13 years in the pharmaceutical industry, working with global companies like MSD, Pfizer, and Abbott. My last role was at Abbott as a Market Access Manager, which I left in 2020, the same year I became a first-time mother to my daughter, Mila, just as the pandemic began. It was a deeply emotional and uncertain time, and stepping away from a stable career wasn’t an easy decision.

During those early months of motherhood, I found myself searching for baby products that felt modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing pieces that aligned with my lifestyle as a new mom. To my surprise, I couldn’t find what I was looking for locally in Malaysia. I often had to order from overseas platforms like Etsy or Australian brands, paying high shipping costs just to access products that felt modern and safe.

That gap sparked the idea for Mils and Key, a name inspired by my daughter Mila and myself, Kie. What began as a personal search soon evolved into something much more meaningful. I wanted to create a brand that makes modern parenting feel easier, more thoughtful, and more beautiful through well-designed essentials.

As a mother, I only want to create products that I would confidently use for my own babies. This philosophy guides every decision we make from design to materials/fabrics used. We consciously choose premium, natural materials like beechwood, bamboo fabric and third party lab tested 100% food grade silicone , prioritizing safety, comfort, and sustainability for little ones.

As my children grow, they continue to be my greatest source of inspiration. Their everyday routines, needs, and little moments constantly shape the way I design and think about each product; keeping everything rooted in real, lived experiences of modern parenting. We have grown from pacifier clips, teether, full range of dinnerware, bamboo change mat, bamboo swaddles and etc.

Getting to where I am today has been a journey built on persistence, passion, and a great deal of self-motivation/disclipine. There were many uncertain moments, especially in the early days and even up till today, but the belief in what I was creating and who I was creating it for, watching mothers appreciating our products that kept me going.

Building Mils and Key has been both challenging and incredibly fulfilling. It’s a journey that has grown alongside my both children, watching both family and brand evolve together has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a baby brand from the ground up has never been easy, especially as a mother of two navigating a market dominated by international baby brands. Gaining parents’ trust as a local baby brand is a constant challenge, but I am incredibly grateful for the strong community that has supported us, sharing our story and the quality we stand for.

There have been difficult moments, the time I had to discard entire production due to a small mistake by our manufacturer. It wasn’t perfect, and I couldn’t, in good conscience, put it into the hands of parents. Finding a trusted and ethical manufacturer is incredibly important to me, even if it takes months to get the right person and factory. On top of that, managing financial pressures, balancing marketing budgets, inventory, and the advice of fellow brand owners has been a constant learning curve.

One of the hardest part of building Mils and Key is staying persistent during tough times. Being a solopreneur can feel really lonely because i am carrying everything on my own and it takes a lot of mental strength. But the feedback and kind words from mothers, whether at pop-ups,online and friends and families, remind me why I started. That’s what keeps me going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started Mils and Key from home, as a mother of two, with a simple but strong intention; to create modern baby products I would confidently use for my own children without compromising safety. Almost six years later, what began as a small idea has grown into a brand now found on retail shelves like Babyland SS2, Babyloft, Round and Round Baby, and Jumping Baby Jacks, and behind it all, I am still running everything on my own as a solo mumprenuer.

I didn’t start this to compete with big international brands but naturally, that became part of the journey. As a local Malaysian baby brand, earning parents’ trust hasn’t been easy. It took persistence, consistency, and a lot of belief in other families.

One of our proudest products is our Travel Bamboo Changing Mat which was sold out 6months after launch. It’s thoughtfully designed with modern prints and practical use in mind, and it fills a market gap I personally experienced, something high quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing that wasn’t easy to find in Malaysia.

What I stand by is simple: high quality doesn’t have to come with an intimidating price tag. I’ve always believed that safe, well-designed baby essentials should be accessible to more families.

Today, I’m proud to call Mils and Key a Malaysian baby brand. There may not be many of us in this local baby space, but that’s exactly why it matters. I’m building something rooted in real motherhood, shaped by real needs, and driven by a genuine passion to do better.

My vision has always stayed the same, to create baby essentials that are safe, sustainable, and modern.

What matters most to you? Why?
From day one, I’ve been intentional about the materials we use. I chose premium beechwood and bamboo fabric because safety and quality are non-negotiable for me. If I wouldn’t use it for my own babies, I wouldn’t sell it. At the same time, I wanted everything to feel modern and beautiful because parents today shouldn’t have to choose between function and style.

Looking ahead, my goal is to elevate Mils and Key to be perceived as an international-standard brand, while staying proudly Malaysian. In fact, one of the most encouraging moments is when customers assume we are an overseas brand, simply from our materials, quality, and design. To me, that is a quiet validation of what I set out to build.
