Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Young.

Hi Linda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Linda Young began her career in 1998 as a registered immigration consultant, helping others prepare and fill out the immigration forms.

As an immigrant from Malaysia herself, she understood firsthand the financial and emotional challenges of navigating a new life in America as an immigrant. For many years, helping new immigrants fill out the immigration forms was the sole focus of her work.

The idea to expand into marriage services came from an unexpected place. Linda learned that her husband’s coworker, a working actor in Hollywood, balanced multiple jobs — including working as a wedding officiant and performing memorial services. Seeing how one person could support themselves through several people-centered roles shifted her perspective. She realized she did not need to limit her work to filling out immigration forms alone and could expand into services that supported people during other important life moments.

After researching the legal requirements, Linda became an officially authorized agent through the Los Angeles County Office to issue marriage licenses and perform marriage ceremonies. She added marriage services to her practice around 2006–2007. Growth was slow at first. Early clients primarily came through Asian community newspapers. A major turning point came with the launch of the company’s website, which expanded visibility and made the service accessible to couples of all backgrounds.

Today, Linda works with clients from around the world who live in California or elsewhere in the United States, offering both immigration filing and marriage officiating services. More than twenty years later, her work continues to focus on helping people formalize family, partnership, and belonging.

Linda’s husband, William Young, joined the business full-time in 2015 after spending more than 30 years working in the entertainment industry as a movie editor. As he considered a second career, he recognized a growing demand for mobile officiants — couples who wanted to get married in locations that felt meaningful to them, rather than traditional venues.
With William’s involvement, the business expanded its mobile services across Southern California. Over the years, he has officiated weddings in a wide range of settings, including beaches, restaurants, backyards, parks, hospitals, private homes, and temporary locations for couples passing through Los Angeles on short visits or layovers at LAX. This flexibility helped define the business as mobile, personal, and adaptable.
The work has occasionally intersected with the entertainment industry. Production companies have approached the business for filming opportunities, including the Comedy Central series Nathan for You, hosted by Nathan Fielder. When Linda was unavailable to appear, William officiated a ceremony for the episode commonly referred to as “Nathan vs. Uber,” including conducting part of the ceremony in Chinese.
Other notable moments were unplanned. During the COVID-19 pandemic, William officiated a small backyard wedding for actress Aubrey Plaza, without recognizing her at the time. The wedding later became public when Plaza mentioned it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
As internet use increasingly shaped how couples searched for marriage services, the business continued to evolve. Online advertising and a stronger digital presence expanded its reach nationwide. Over time, the next generation of the family became involved in different capacities.
1 Hour Marriage operates on a model designed to be immediate and accessible. The team issues the marriage license and performs the ceremony in one visit, either in their small in-office ceremony room — designed to be comfortable and photo-friendly — or at a location chosen by the couple. Clients come from California and from around the world, including couples passing through Los Angeles for a single day. Ceremonies take place in hotels, restaurants, outdoor locations such as Santa Monica Beach, and hospitals. They operate their business 7 days a week and have flexible hours, to best meet the needs of their clients, who often can’t take time off work to go to the courthouse.
This includes hospital and last-wish marriages. These ceremonies often take place under urgent or emotionally intense circumstances, and the family views this service as an important way to reduce stress for couples during critical moments.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, their daughter Candice Young took on a central operational role. When county offices closed to the public for over a year and marriage licenses were issued only through authorized third-party providers, 1 Hour Marriage experienced a sudden surge in demand. Candice led efforts to modernize internal systems, including rebuilding the website, upgrading scheduling and booking workflows, automating email communication, and managing increased call volume.
In response to health regulations, the business developed a COVID-safe drive-through wedding model. Couples remained in their vehicles while documents were reviewed and signed using sanitized materials, and ceremonies were performed car-side. As restrictions eased, Candice also helped redesign the in-office ceremony space to balance cleanliness, safety, and warmth. She further supported growth through customer service, online visibility via platforms such as Yelp and Google My Business, and by adding Spanish-language support.
Goldie Young contributed in multiple capacities. With a background in web development, she supported the company’s digital infrastructure. As an artist and designer, she also created the visual identity of 1 Hour Marriage, including the logo, stickers, and graphics used on cups and client materials.
Most recently, Yenmin joined the business after returning from New York City, where she previously worked as a teacher. Since joining, she has focused on building the company’s social media presence and creating educational content to help couples understand the marriage license process. Her work emphasizes clarity, accessibility, and engagement, particularly for couples navigating the process for the first time.

Today, 1 Hour Marriage is a fully family-run business spanning multiple generations and skill sets, including immigration filing services, wedding officiating, operations, design, technology, and education. The shared goal across all roles is to make marriage accessible, legally sound, and as stress-free as possible for couples from all backgrounds.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This business has been meaningful and joyful, but it has also required long hours, constant problem-solving, and the ability to navigate complexity at every stage.

In the early years of the marriage business, one of the biggest challenges was simply educating the public that the service existed. Most people are familiar with a traditional marriage process: go to the courthouse to get a marriage license first and schedule a ceremony for a later date. The idea that couples could legally obtain a license and get married on the same day was unfamiliar to many. Helping people understand that this option was available — and legitimate — took time and consistent outreach. Early growth was slow, and visibility was limited.

Another major challenge came as the business evolved from a one-person operation into a family-run one. For many years, Linda made decisions independently. When her husband joined the business, and later their daughters, the process became more collaborative — and more complex. Decision-making now involved multiple perspectives, generational differences, and varying comfort levels with experimentation and risk. The older generation relied on methods that had worked for decades, while the younger generation introduced new technologies, software, and marketing platforms. Adjusting to shared leadership, letting others test new approaches, and redefining roles within a family dynamic required patience and flexibility.

Operationally, the work also involves a high level of repetition. Because most clients only get married once, the same questions come up again and again. Answering those questions clearly and compassionately — even after hundreds or thousands of repetitions — is an ongoing challenge and a core part of the service.

The COVID-19 pandemic became a major structural stress test. When county offices closed to the public, marriage licenses were issued only through authorized third-party providers, including 1 Hour Marriage. Demand surged almost overnight as couples scrambled to find ways to get married under rapidly changing regulations. The business had to quickly adapt by modernizing systems, managing a dramatic increase in calls, and developing new workflows that complied with health protocols. This included creating a drive-through wedding model that allowed couples to complete the legal process safely without leaving their cars.

The pandemic also created extreme demand spikes. One example was February 22, 2022 (2/22/22), a date that attracted couples who valued its numerical significance. Despite ongoing safety restrictions, the business had to coordinate the logistics of marrying approximately 90 couples in a single day while remaining compliant with health and legal requirements.

More recently, another challenge emerged when the Los Angeles County introduced its own express marriage services. After observing the effectiveness of same-day marriage providers such as ourself, the county expanded its offerings, which directly reduced demand for us. Adjusting to increased competition from the very institution that regulates the service has been difficult and requires ongoing recalibration.
Across all of these challenges — slow early growth, regulatory complexity, family dynamics, pandemic pressures, and increased competition — the consistent thread has been adaptation. The business has had to respond to changing systems while continuing to serve couples during moments that are often urgent, emotional, or deeply personal.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
1 Hour Marriage is a private marriage registration bureau and intimate ceremony space offering what the family describes as an “elevated courthouse experience.” Couples can complete the entire process in one place—obtaining their marriage license and having their ceremony on the same day—without having to schedule multiple county appointments or return on different days.

What sets our approach apart is how we reduce the confusion that often comes with the county process. Many couples arrive unsure how to complete forms correctly: how to list a divorce from decades ago, how to record parents’ names when translation is involved, or what to do when family histories don’t fit neatly into online fields. Others don’t realize until too late that the county requires separate appointments for the license and ceremony, releases appointments only weeks in advance, or operates solely during weekday working hours. We guide couples through these details in real time, answering questions and handling logistics so the process feels clear, calm, and human.

The business is based in Alhambra, where the team issues marriage licenses and performs ceremonies in an intimate, chapel-style room. The space is intentionally small, warm, and thoughtfully designed so couples can invite their closest people and still feel comfortable taking photos. In addition to in-office ceremonies, 1 Hour Marriage also specializes in mobile weddings, bringing all required services directly to a couple’s chosen location anywhere in California.

The couples they work with span a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances: young couples and older couples, citizens and non-citizens, locals and tourists, longtime partners who delayed paperwork for decades, couples beginning immigration filing, and couples seeking a practical, intimate alternative to traditional weddings. Many clients are drawn to the simplicity of the service, while others are motivated by urgency, logistics, or personal values.

A key part of the brand is challenging narrow ideas about what a “real” wedding looks like. 1 Hour Marriage provides an alternative way to get married that does not require large guest lists, high costs, or elaborate production—while still honoring the significance of the commitment. Couples are encouraged to keep ceremonies small, dress however they choose, and focus on the commitment itself rather than external expectations. The team emphasizes that elopements and courthouse-style weddings can still be deeply meaningful, personal, and emotionally powerful.

Accessibility is also central to how the business operates. The team offers services in English, Spanish, and Chinese, and frequently serves multilingual and immigrant communities. They are open seven days a week, including holidays, and maintain flexible hours — particularly during times when courthouses are closed. Their central location allows them to serve clients from across the greater Los Angeles region, as well as military couples traveling from nearby bases. Through online advertising, they also regularly work with couples visiting from other countries who plan short stays in California.
Brand-wise, the family takes pride in the experience they create. Guests frequently comment on the warmth of the service, the ease of the process, and the atmosphere of the ceremony space, which features real plants and natural light. Many first-time visitors remark that the room feels more beautiful and welcoming in person than they expected.

Our family dynamic is a little unconventional. Each of us is very different, with our own strengths, personalities, and ideas, but we’re united in how deeply we care about this work. We’re passionate about creating experiences that are simple, legally sound, and genuinely personal—so couples can focus on the meaning of the moment, not the logistics.
In many ways, it feels like our family is marrying your family.
