Life & Work with Valentina Berti of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valentina Berti.

Hi Valentina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a cinematographer based in Los Angeles, born and raised in Italy. I’ve been drawn to filmmaking since my last year of high school, pursuing it ever since.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Video Design from IED Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, and a Master’s degree in Film from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, where I currently live.

I’m grateful to have been able to turn a passion into a professional career. Today, I work across music, fashion, narrative projects, and commercials. Over the past two years, I’ve also developed a strong interest in photography, which I continue to nurture alongside my cinematography work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve always approached my path with a positive mindset and determination, and my family has been very supportive.

Challenges are inevitable, and one of the biggest has been finding my way in a new country. I’ve learned to see these moments as opportunities for growth and learning. Over time, I’ve also learned to trust my instincts when making decisions and to give myself space to let creativity flow.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work as a cinematographer includes music videos, short films, fashion films, and commercials. I believe lighting plays a key role in shaping emotion and storytelling, and it remains one of the most important elements of my creative process.

I’m also drawn to fashion, not only as style but as a form of expression. I love working with characters and subjects in a way that allows them to feel confident and authentic on camera.

Some of my most recent work includes a cover for L’Officiel Hommes, which I’m very proud of. I’ve also been part of productions for Target, Nike Sportswear, Interscope Records, and Dazed Magazine, and I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside artists and public figures such as Kourtney Kardashian, Travis Scott, Rauw Alejandro, Veneda Carter, Yeat, and others.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
What has worked best for me is approaching networking in a genuine and organic way, rather than forcing it. Finding a mentor and building connections has been an important part of my journey, especially after moving to a new country.

I’ve found that mentors often appear through collaboration, by working on sets, assisting others, and being open to learning from more experienced professionals. Showing reliability and staying consistent over time has helped me build meaningful relationships within the industry.

My advice would be to stay curious, be proactive, and focus on creating real connections through shared work and mutual respect. Even small collaborations can lead to long-term mentorship and new opportunities.
