Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Hu.
Hi Cynthia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an actor, model and movement artist who enjoys to create art out of the ordinary that’s easily overlooked. I spent my childhood in Guangdong, China and first moved to the U.S. in 2013. I went to high school in a small town in Oregon and I moved to New York for school and to pursue acting in 2015. My experience shaped my art a lot. Growing up in multiple culture background I love to see how they intertwine and weave through my work. My practice in art is very versatile. I work across dance, sound bath, acting, painting and I made jewelry. All of my work are guided by a sense of expressiveness, fluidity and intuition.
MFA in acting from The Actors Studio Drama School

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
ups and downs, like everything in life. Acting can be a very inactive job sometimes because you are always waiting to be selected. It can be a lot of waiting, for a well- fit role, for casting director to email back, for things to line up. There are a lot of uncertainties and it’s very important to stay grounded and remember where you’re heading to. Always go back to your practice and let that roots you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor. I have performed on stage, in film, in commercials. I model as well. I’m honestly proud of all the work I’ve done and got me here. So I don’t want to simply list a lot of credit for this question.
I would say, I’m proud of the way I approach the work. Even in the profession full of uncertainty, I stay focused and curious on the process, I’m not afraid to take risks in rehearsals and I’m always willing to play and explore. I really think that when the real magic happens. I’m very present.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It’s really important to know what works for you. Different body respond differently and you are going to hear so many stories about how other people reach their goals that may or may not works for you. Craft wise, acting is a practice. Show up, take risks, be curious, take your time to grow. It’s so important to care of your mind and body even when you’re not acting so when an opportunity arises you are ready for it. At the same time, there is also a business side to this career if you want it to be sustainable. Learn how to manage your time, energy, and budget. Build networks that can last, create opportunities for yourself. Have a dream vision and move towards it with intention.
