Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Van Den Berg.
Hi Alexis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always known I was meant to have a career that involves creativity but finding exactly what that could be has been the journey. When I was a kid– I wanted to do everything.. Creating new board games for my little sister and I to play, drawing comics for the kids at recess in elementary school. I think another part that played a role in cultivating my creative mind was my parents’ divorce. My mom was a single parent and working hard to keep the lights on– so I kept myself and my little sister busy with my creativity and imagination.
I was always interested in technology, art and creativity with a little bit of business sprinkled in. The path that it led me to was Graphic Design! It was the perfect blend of all of those things for me (And a big bonus is that I get to work with so many different types of people in different fields. The variety just itches that scratch of creativity for me)
Another huge part of my life is to make sure I am keeping up with personal projects that light me up.
When I am not working on design projects, you’ll probably find me tending to my garden or running around trying to get cool shots with a new camera.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly although to me personally it feels like a roller coaster sometimes, compared to other people I think I’ve had things very easy. I’ve always had a strong sense of self and have had direction because of that which I feel like is a blessing even when things go awry. The main thing I’ve learned over time is to always trust my own intuition because I know what is right and wrong for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an owner of a graphic design studio and I work with budding businesses to bring their ideas from the ethers into something that is tangible and useable for business. A lot of people have creative ideas for starting a business but have difficulties getting those ideas into something physical where they can do something with it. This is what I love to do. I love to hear ideas and guide people collaboratively to create whatever they may need to launch their product or service.
If I had to name one thing that I am most proud of it is that I like to bring more joy & creativity into “work”. I want the people I work with to have someone they can bounce off ideas with and feel excited about what their creating. I often work with very smart, talented, and creative individuals but after the 100th revision of something and constant critiquing, you can see the life is drained out of everyone. I think having an environment where you can talk about the things that are exciting you, brings up the energy and even when things are heavy, you’re balanced.
On the side, I have really been enjoying cultivating my plant-themed Instagram because not only do I have more of an excuse to garden but I am also learning social media. I also really enjoy photography, am looking into UGC creation, and running an Amazon Finds page on TikTok 🙂
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Make sure you are making time to do your hobbies. They say “When the student is ready, the teacher appears” and that has literally always been the case for me. When you’re out there doing things, you’re going to naturally feel pulled towards the right people.
Networking doesn’t have to be a crazy thing– The other day, I rented a camera and went out into a town I hadn’t been to in a year or so to take photos and someone struck up a conversation with me about photography & asked to stay in touch. It really does happen like that so make sure you’re going out and doing the things you love. (Or at least posting about them online 🙂 )
