Today we’d like to introduce you to Esam Boktor.
Hi Esam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the United States in 1999 from Upper Egypt, from a small village called Manfalut. I left when I was 19 years old, because my family was living through an extremely dangerous time—one shaped by religious extremism that spread across our region during the 1990s.
The economic and political climate in Egypt during that decade created the conditions for extremist groups to grow. In many villages, fear became part of daily life. And for families like mine—especially as Christians—life could become unsafe overnight. For us, that wasn’t an idea. It was real, and it was constant.
One of the clearest examples was when my older brother was nearly stoned to death after leaving church on Easter morning. And I personally was frequently targeted and attacked in our streets simply because of who we were.
I still remember being nine years old, hearing extremist groups—Salafis—calling for a “day of cleansing,” where they planned to go house by house targeting Christian homes to rape, kill, and plunder. They knew our home was Christian. The night before, it was marked.
That day, my brothers ordered me onto the roof to stand guard. We had made homemade Molotov cocktails, hoping we could protect ourselves if they reached our door. My father, a man of deep faith, refused to run—he insisted on sitting in his office as usual, writing biblical commentary he had been working on for most of his life.
Inside the home, we made a plan that no family should ever have to make. My mother and sisters were sent to the farthest part of the house. The boys would stay at the front, ready to fight and die first, doing anything we could to prevent the attackers from reaching them. I’m one of seven siblings—four boys and three girls—and we truly believed that day might be our last.
As they came closer, we could hear them saying, “The house with the green shutters is one.”
But right before they reached our block, chaos broke out. One of the Egyptian soldiers nearby—who had been standing by helplessly—was attacked, and the extremists made the mistake of cutting off his arms with a machete. That triggered gunfire and panic, scattering the crowd and stopping what was about to happen. And for that reason, our home was spared that day.
But the terror didn’t end. For the next ten years, from ages 9 to 19, life was still filled with fear. Some mornings my mother would say goodbye and tell us, “I don’t know if you’re coming back.” There was always a target on our back.
After my father died suddenly, everything became more urgent. It was time to go.
So I left Egypt and moved to Los Angeles, hoping for safety, freedom, and a future where survival wasn’t the daily question.
But the beginning here wasn’t easy either.
I arrived in Los Angeles with very little to no money, and I moved in with my sister and her family in a small apartment in West LA. I was grateful, but starting over in a new country—with a new language, new system, and without most of my family—was one of the hardest seasons of my life.
I took whatever work I could find. I worked at gas stations, did security jobs, and worked anywhere someone would give me an opportunity. The first several years were extremely difficult. I was trying to survive, support myself, and build something from nothing—all while carrying the weight of everything I had escaped, and being separated from the people I loved most.
But somehow, by the grace of God, I kept moving forward.
Over time, I began actively searching for a long-term opportunity, something I could truly build. That’s when I started pursuing a career in insurance. I earned multiple licenses, kept learning, stayed disciplined, and eventually took the biggest step of my life—I opened my own agencies in Santa Monica.
And from that small beginning, it grew.
Today, that agency has grown into one of the largest agencies in the state—something I never could have imagined when I first arrived with nothing but hope and faith.
So when I think about my story, it’s really a story of survival turning into purpose. It’s about going from living under constant threat, to building a life in freedom—and trying every day to honor that gift by serving people, creating opportunity, and leading with faith and gratitude.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all.
Even after everything I shared earlier about where I came from and why I left, the transition to building a life in the U.S. came with its own challenges. Starting from scratch in Los Angeles with very little money, working whatever jobs I could get just to stay afloat, and trying to create stability without most of my family around—it was difficult on every level.
And even once I found my path in insurance and built the agency, the road has still been full of obstacles.
One of the biggest struggles we’re facing today is the insurance crisis in California, and it’s made business incredibly difficult—carrier instability, tightening underwriting, rising costs, and constant uncertainty in the marketplace. It’s forced everyone in this industry to adapt, and it’s not an easy environment to operate in.
But in spite of all that, we’ve continued to grow—and I genuinely believe it’s because we’ve doubled down on what matters most: real relationships and real service.
We know our clients. We reach them personally and consistently. We’re proactive, present, and involved. This isn’t a faceless, automated operation.
This is not an AI-generated insurance agency.
When you call, a real person answers—someone sitting at a desk in Santa Monica—someone who cares deeply about every need, every loss, and every issue that comes our way. And that level of personal commitment has made all the difference, especially in a time when so many people feel like they can’t get help when they need it most.
As you know, we’re big fans of Esam Boktor Insurance Agency Inc. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our agency is built to provide the highest level of insurance and financial services, with an approach that is deeply involved, holistic, and highly personal. What people should know right away is this: we’re not designed for someone who’s looking to do the bare minimum.
A lot of insurance in California has become “check-the-box” coverage—people buy what the law requires or what a lender demands, and they assume they’re protected. But the truth is, many people in this state are underinsured, and they don’t find out until something goes wrong.
What we do differently is we educate. We walk clients through what they actually have, what they’re missing, what they’re exposed to, and what it truly means to be properly insured—especially in a high-risk environment like California.
We’re known for being incredibly detailed and relationship-driven. We don’t just insure a car or a home—we get to know our clients’ lives, goals, risks, families, and businesses. That deeper understanding allows us to tailor coverage in a way that protects the full picture, not just one piece of it.
We also offer the full spectrum of services, including:
Personal lines (auto, home, umbrella, specialty coverage)
Commercial insurance for business owners
Health insurance solutions
Financial services, including annuities
Long-term planning tools like saving for college and building financial stability
Our team is extremely knowledgeable, and we take pride in being the kind of agency that brings clarity to a world that often feels confusing. California insurance is complicated right now, and there are a lot of people walking around with policies they don’t understand. We make sure our clients are informed, protected, and confident in what they have.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built. We’ve earned a reputation for being hands-on, accessible, and genuinely invested in every client’s outcome. We don’t operate like a call center or a faceless platform. We’re real people, in a real office, committed to protecting real lives—both personal and business.
That’s what sets us apart: education, full-service protection, and a level of personal involvement that most agencies simply don’t offer.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I think the insurance industry—especially in California—is going to continue going through major shifts, and a lot of it will be driven by one reality: risk has changed, and the cost of that risk has changed.
A few years ago, we saw a major insurance crisis unfold in California. Several carriers either pulled out of the state entirely or severely limited new business because of catastrophic exposure—especially following large-scale wildfire losses and other climate-driven events. That moment forced the entire market to confront something that had been building for years: the system wasn’t operating sustainably.
And this is a holistic issue. It’s not just about carriers, and it’s not just about consumers. It’s a combination of catastrophic events, rising rebuild costs, claims severity, legal complexity, and a regulatory environment that has struggled to keep pace with the realities on the ground.
One important point most people don’t realize is that insurance companies are consumers too. They “buy” labor, materials, repairs, rentals, medical services, legal costs, and reconstruction—just like everyone else. And as costs have gone up exponentially over the last decade, those increases had to eventually show up in premiums.
For a long time, premiums couldn’t fully adjust fast enough to reflect those rising costs, and carriers couldn’t compensate in real time. That’s why, when the market finally corrected, the increases felt dramatic and sudden. But the reality is—without that correction—the insurance industry in California would have been on the verge of collapse.
The difficult part is that many households simply weren’t prepared for the financial impact. We spent a lot of time educating our clients about what these increases meant and why they were happening, even though it was painful for many people to endure.
And what we’re seeing now—more than ever—is a growing problem with underinsurance. As premiums rise, many consumers try to offset costs by lowering coverage or stripping policies down. Unfortunately, that often creates major gaps, and people don’t realize it until a serious loss happens.
This is something we deal with every day in our agency—helping clients make decisions that make financial sense while still protecting them properly. That balance is going to be one of the biggest ongoing challenges in the years ahead.
So when I look forward, I see an industry that will keep evolving toward: more risk-based pricing; tighter underwriting; a stronger emphasis on mitigation and prevention and a consumer base that’s increasingly aware that real protection matters
The landscape has shifted dramatically, and the agencies that will thrive are the ones that stay close to their clients, educate them, and help them find smart solutions—not just cheaper policies.
