Exploring Life & Business with Ian Walters of Walters Accountancy Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Walters.

Hi Ian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Thousand Oaks, just close enough to Los Angeles to feel the pull. From early on, I was driven by curiosity and ambition – I wanted to understand how successful people built real businesses.

After college, I moved to Beverly Hills with my best friend, actor Taylor John Smith. Being dropped into that environment accelerated everything. I was exposed to founders, creatives, and executives operating at a high level, and I learned quickly by necessity. Entrepreneurs and startups began coming to me for guidance around entity formation, best practices, and growth strategy.

Around that time, my mother, Kathryn, had a small but highly respected accounting practice she’d built over three decades in Thousand Oaks. We saw an opportunity to combine her firm’s reputation and experience with the momentum I had built in Los Angeles. That became Walters Accountancy Corporation.

The firm grew rapidly, expanding into the entertainment and creator economy while maintaining a strong foundation in traditional accounting and advisory work. We made big bets on ourselves, invested heavily in our team, and focused relentlessly on quality.

Today, my priority is simple: deliver exceptional service and protect our reputation. Trust is everything in our business, and I’m excited about continuing to build a firm that supports ambitious business owners across Los Angeles and beyond.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. Early on, I had to learn that ambition can get ahead of reality. When you’re young and driven, you want to build something big – and fast – and it’s easy to believe you can handle anything that comes your way.

One of the hardest lessons was realizing that saying yes to everything isn’t responsible leadership. There were moments where opportunities looked incredible on paper, but we weren’t positioned to deliver the level of work our standards required. Even though the money was great, the risk to our reputation was bigger.

In one case, we made the difficult decision to step back and recommend a larger firm that was better suited for the client. It was uncomfortable and costly in the short term, but it reinforced something fundamental for me: protecting trust matters more than chasing growth. That decision shaped how we approach every opportunity today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Walters Accountancy Corporation?
Walters Accountancy Corporation is a boutique accounting and advisory firm built to function as a true finance partner, not just a compliance shop. We work with business owners, creatives, and entrepreneurs who need more than bookkeeping – they need structure, strategy, and someone who actually understands how their business operates.

We specialize in working with growing companies, particularly in the entertainment and supply chain economy, where income is complex and traditional accounting often falls short. What sets us apart is our ability to combine high-level financial strategy with day-to-day execution. We’re as comfortable discussing long-term growth and capital planning as we are managing the details that keep a business running smoothly.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of our reputation. We’ve grown primarily through referrals, and that only happens when clients trust you. We’re selective about who we work with, we invest heavily in our people, and we don’t cut corners.

At its core, WACCPA is built on trust, discretion, and long-term thinking. Our goal is to help ambitious business owners build something sustainable – not just profitable – and to be the firm they rely on as their businesses evolve.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
All of our engagements are custom services we design with our clients. Anybody can schedule a discovery call through our website to discuss how we can be helpful to their business. Sharing our story with friends family and colleagues is the best way to support us
