Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Knight.
Hi Mackenzie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been writing as long as I can remember. I have always been a creative and loved various forms of art and expression. From baking to dance and finally writing, I have explored so many different avenues.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I thought I was going to be a professional dancer for many years. Not only did I struggle with coming up with my own choreography though, I got injured and that effectively ended my performance plans. I then debated becoming a pastry chef. However, I am not the best with things like figuring out the accounting and business side of things which you need to know at the beginning when you don’t have enough money to hire someone better at tracking things like that. Finally, I found that I kept coming back to writing. Not only was it a therapy and outlet when I was battling doubts about other things, but I truly enjoyed it. Getting my name out there and managing to successfully complete all my deadlines has been a challenge but one I enjoy striving to overcome.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think all authors are both inherently the same and completely different. There is a saying that if you gave thirty writers the same prompt, you would get 32 different stories. Not only do we all have our own unique voices and perspectives, but some of us can’t stop at just one. We see the world through our own lens. At the same time, we choose to work with words. We tell different stories in much the same way.
I am a thriller writer. Unlike most of my author friends, I do not write romance. I explore the darker realms with a focus on the shadows. I love looking into the creepy side of the human mind and finding the parts that make others squirm. Then I shine a spotlight on it. I ask, why do they do that? What makes someone think that? Who are these people, what have the been through, and what will they do next? The traumatic side of psychology has always fascinated me so I use that as inspiration.
That being said, I am actually best known for my stuffed sidekick and mascot, Poe The Raven.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Putting on plays for my babysitter and our parents based on stories I created as a child.
