Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Matt Langford of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Matt Langford and have shared our conversation below.

Matt, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
In the morning, the first 90 minutes typically involve walking and feeding my little frenchie Bleu then heading to the gym to get a good workout in.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi my name is Matt Langford a.k.a Coaston and I am a creative and tarot reader based in Los Angeles. For my creative side, I tend to live in “eras” of my life and document them using my 90s cam corder with my creative friends. These “eras” are based off of what I’m currently going through in life and document them along with music I like at the time that also resonates with what I’m going through. For example so far I’ve done Renaissance era (love & desire), Trap era (power & success), and right now I’m wrapping up Vampire era (mystery, seduction, and betrayal). All of these eras were based on events happening in my life along with the seasons; Renaissance for spring, Trap for summer and fall for Vampire.

As for my tarot reading, Im an energy reader and give readings to my collective on TikTok. I tend to give life advice and guidance based on the energy I’m feeling within the readings. I also help people gain confidence within themselves and see themselves in a way other people may view them.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Honestly, I would say when I started reading tarot and tapping into my own power. I just got out of a toxic situation with someone and I needed guidance and answers to what just happened and what to do with myself and how to move on. I tapped into the power of alchemy and learned how to turn something negative happening to me into something positive and using the energy to build myself up again. This happened about 3 years ago and I noticed that readers I would resonate with were helping me get through what I was going through and also noticed the readings I was doing for myself were also exactly matching up with the readers I was watching and going to. Thats when I knew I had something special within me but didn’t feel the need to share it until I started my tarot TikTok about a a year and a half ago.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I started sharing what I went through in my creative work and also my readings I feel like I was finally releasing the pain on my own terms. In my creative work its not always direct theres some hidden meanings behind what i create but I feel like people just see it as just me having fun but I’m actually telling a story of my pain and how I felt while going through it. I rather it be that way so it can be my own little secret that I let out of my system and into the ether. I also talk about what I went through in my readings and it’s also great that other people resonate with what i’m talking about and also going through as well. They also send me private messages telling me how much i have changed their life or inspired them and its nice to receive those messages but its also terrible that I had to go through hell in order to do what I do.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say so and I feel like my friends & family would say the same as well. Im really big on authenticity and being genuine but I feel like nowadays thats rare. Being a content creator who talks about authenticity and healing many people have tried to “test” me in real life by provoking me or trying to get a “gotcha” moment to prove that I’m not who I say I am but they always fail because I am who I say I am. I didn’t go through what I went through just to fake it; I actually lived through what I talk about and show in my content.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I feel like I’m doing what I was born to do 100%. Everything I’ve been doing has naturally came to me. With tarot Ive always been into spirituality but was turned away from it because I grew up in a christian household. It wasn’t until I was older where I just naturally got into it. Same with my creative work; Ive always been a creative since birth. I loved music, photography, art and architecture. Growing up my mom would take me to the Getty Center and I always loved it especially the baroque art pieces.
