Rising Stars: Meet Jocelyn Silva of Los Angeles, California

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Silva.

Hi Jocelyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Jocelyn Silva and I am a sexual empowerment coach and sex educator. I am born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and was brought up in a first generation Catholic household. My mother is from El Salvador and my father is from Mexico. I went to Catholic school kindergarten to 12th grade (Guardian Angel in Pacoima and Bishop Alemany in Mission Hills) and even wanted to be a nun when I was 16 years old. I have always been a sexual person. Ever since I can remember, I was curious about sex. I always had crushes on boys and the thought of kissing one would fill be with excitement and dread at the same time. Catholicism does not celebrate sexuality. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t condone a healthy sexual expression at all. The teachings I was hearing about my sexual expression went completely against what I was feeling in my body. My curiosities were deemed as sinful and wrong. This created an immense shame inside of me about my body, my sexual expression, and myself in general.

When I turned 18 and graduated high school, I went through an identity crisis. I had sex for the first time and it was in a word… AMAZING. I felt alive, free, and excited to explore of it. I had a boyfriend at the time who was lovely to me. He loved me and I loved him. Sex felt like something we shared from a place of love. Had I been lied to my whole life? How can this be wrong?

I went on a journey to heal my sexual shame and learn everything I could about sexuality. The more I learned, the more empowered I felt. The more confident I became. The more ALIVE I was. I loved this feeling and I wanted to share it with the world. I became a certified sex educator at age 20 and decided I wanted to become a sex therapist to help others heal their sexual shame and step in to their authentic sexual power as well.

I got my Bachelor’s degree in gender and women studies, I managed a sexual health and wellness boutique (A Touch of Romance in Valencia) for several years, and got my master’s degree in social work with the intentions of becoming a licensed clinical social worker with an emphasis on sexual health and wellness. After graduating with my master’s degree, I had a lot of unfortunate life situations happen. I lost my job, my spouse and I got divorced, and I was forced to look at my life and see where I was failing and what wasn’t working.

This sent me into another personal development phase and elevated my sexual self-expression to the 10th degree. This is where I discovered the importance of RELENTLESS AUTHENTICITY which is now my biggest core value in life.

Right before the pandemic, I decided to hire a life coach and this is where I discovered coaching for the first time. I fell in love with it! I appreciated the step by step guidance that a coach can provide and wanted to learn how I could do it for myself. I began intimacy coaching in January of 2020 and have not looked back since. In February of 2021, I decided to become a digital nomad and moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Since then, I have lived in several parts of the world; Croatia, Colombia, Spain, Guatemala to name a few. I currently reside in Tulum, Mexico where I run my business full-time online and support people from all over the world.

I love what I do. I am passionate about helping others. I truly believe that I can change the world one orgasm at a time. And so, I have made it my life’s work to do so.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not bee a smooth road. I have had several challenges.

My own sexual shame-
I battled for years with my sexual expression and feeling like a bad person because of it. I learned that telling the truth was wrong and would lead to rejection because I never felt that I could speak my truth and be accepted for it.

My battle with my spirituality-
I loved my relationship with God. Luckily, after several years of identifying as an atheist, I have found a spiritual expression that is aligned with me and my values. I do believe in a higher power again. My higher power is kind, celebrates my sexuality, and accepts me as I am.

My divorce-
Going through a divorce at 29 was incredibly demoralizing. I felt like a failure. Dealing with that and learning to forgive all of the mistakes I made in that relationship has been a tough journey, but one that was very worth it. I am still on it…

My mother’s health-
In 2019, my mother was in a coma for 10 days after having really bad pneumonia. Her almost dying really shook me to my core. Made me realize what is important in life. I truly believe my business is not only something I do to help others or make a living, it is how I honor my mother. I wish my mom had the sex education that is available to women now. I now understand that the reason why my mom couldn’t teach me about sex or empower me in this way was because she herself wasn’t taught anything. She was speaking from a place of ignorance and trauma. I forgive her and dedicate my business to her.

My belief in myself-
When you are a woman who is running her own business, doubt and fear have a way of sneaking in trying to kill everything. Waking up and choosing to believe in myself, in my mission, and in my work is a daily struggle. I am proud of how far I have come and I know that believing in myself will get me to where I would like to go.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a sexual empowerment coach and sex educator. In a nutsell, I support individuals and couples in having a better sex life through education, coaching, and somatic healing practices.

I have worked with a large range of clients from couples who are on the verge of divorce working to get the spark back in their relationships, to people who have never had an orgasm and are ready to experience the magic their bodies offer.

I do one on one private coaching where my clients and discuss what their intimacy goals are and I support them in making those goals a reality. I work with people of all genders and sexual orientations, individuals and couples.

I facilitate women’s circles where I guide women in looking at their vulvas through a mirror and connecting with their sexualities in a powerful and unique way.

I do corporate trainings for lingerie and sex toys stores ie. The Pleasure Chest and Honey Birdette.

And I facilitate workshops on various topics related to sexual health and wellness.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have 2 things that I think most people wouldn’t know about me.

1. I have a very vibrant life outside of my business. I love adventure, I go to the gym often, I take handstand classes, I play the drums, I go dancing often. I love to have fun, laugh, explore and meet new people. My close friends will tell you… I always have a great story to tell.

2. I am in the trenches with my clients. I don’t simply teach about intimacy and authenticity. It is something I work on practicing on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, I would go as far as to say that the reason I am so good at teaching this is because it has been the most challenging thing for me to learn for myself. I continue to learn everyday side by side with the people I lead and teach.
