Meet Heather Sutherland of It’s a vibe salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sutherland.

Hi heather, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

How I Started It’s A Vibe Salon

Opening It’s A Vibe Salon wasn’t just about returning to the beauty industry for me — it truly felt like coming home. I grew up in El Segundo, and after spending my early career in some of Orange County’s top salons, life took me in a different direction for a while. I stepped away from behind the chair to raise my family and threw myself into serving the community I love so much. I spent years volunteering — from PTA president to School Site Council, Ed! Foundation, Little League, and the city’s environmental committee — and in all of it, I found connection, purpose, and a deeper appreciation for this town.

But even while I was volunteering and focusing on my kids, my passion for doing hair never left. I missed the creativity, the conversations, and the joy of helping people feel like the best version of themselves. When the time felt right, I knew I wanted to create something of my own — something that blended my love for the craft with the heart of the community that shaped me.

That vision became It’s A Vibe Salon.

I imagined a space that felt warm, personal, and welcoming — a boutique studio where clients feel seen and cared for, not rushed. I wanted it to be more than a place to get your hair done… I wanted it to feel like a little hub of creativity, connection, and good energy right on Main Street.

When the perfect space opened up, I trusted my gut and went for it. In 2024, I opened the doors to It’s A Vibe, a two-chair salon that reflects everything I value: community, authenticity, and artistry. From hosting pop-ups with local makers to supporting causes close to my heart, I’ve built the salon to be an extension of who I am — rooted in service, fueled by creativity, and always centered around people.

Today, It’s A Vibe is thriving not just because of beautiful hair, but because it’s built on relationships, intention, and the genuine love I have for this city. Every appointment, every event, every conversation reminds me that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It honestly has been a smooth road. I’d say my biggest obstacle has been both having enough time in the day to add more clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of It’s a vibe salon. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
It’s A Vibe Salon is a boutique, two-chair studio in the heart of El Segundo, built on connection, creativity, and a true love for making people feel confident. I specialize in blonding, dimensional color, Brazilian blowouts, and modern, lived-in styles — but above all, I’m known for offering an elevated experience that still feels warm, personal, and completely unpretentious.

What sets my salon apart is the energy you feel the moment you walk in. I created a space that’s intimate and welcoming, where every guest gets my full attention from start to finish. There’s no assembly-line approach, no rushing people in and out — just thoughtful, tailored services designed around what each client truly wants and needs. I want people to leave feeling not only beautiful, but seen, heard, and cared for.

I’m also incredibly proud of the community aspect of my brand. It’s A Vibe isn’t just a salon; it’s a place where local makers, artists, and small businesses come together. I regularly host pop-ups, charity collaborations, and special events that support our neighbors and celebrate the amazing creativity within El Segundo. Community is at the heart of everything I do, and I love that my business allows me to stay deeply connected to the town I grew up in.

Brand-wise, I’m proud that It’s A Vibe reflects authenticity and intention. From the services I offer to the retail I curate — including Amika, IGK, candles, accessories, and unique boutique finds — everything is chosen with care. My goal is for clients to feel inspired the second they step inside, whether they’re coming for a transformation, a touch-up, or just a good blowout before a special event.

For readers who haven’t visited yet, I want them to know this: It’s A Vibe is more than beautiful hair. It’s a place where people feel comfortable, uplifted, and part of something special. It’s a studio rooted in passion, community, and the belief that when you feel good, you show up differently in the world. And I’m honored every day to create that experience for the people of El Segundo and beyond.
