Today we’d like to introduce you to Emeka Nwokolo.
Hi Emeka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria to a Igbo Father and Delta Mother. At the age of 23, I moved to Los Angeles to live with my dad, chase my soccer dreams, and look for the new opportunities in life that all new immigrants and searching for.
Although my father was a boxing trainer and a boxing fitness instructor and retired 1984 Olympic professional boxer I was not yet interested in boxing.
Instead, I went to the tryouts for the LA Galaxy, unfortunately I was injured in the tryouts. I tore a ligament in my ankle, and that ended my soccer career.
After that, I started spending more time at Tiger boxing gym, my father’s gym, helping train people. Honestly, I didn’t like boxing at first. I wasn’t serious about it because I didn’t grow up boxing. I just liked training people. I learned how to coach clients for boxing fitness and began to love the sport. I decided to take my first amateur boxing fights, one win, two losses.
Soon after, I started to get into the rhythm of the gym life my whole life changed. I was driving home from a work event on a raining night when my car fell 300 feet off of a Malibu cliff. Surprisingly, I survived without physical injuries. I was stuck upside down in my car for hours when finally I knew I must survive and broke free from the vehicle. I climbed up the mountain in the rain with some scissors I found in my truck.
That is the moment that changed my life. I told myself, “Maybe God gave me a second chance.” From that day, I decided to take boxing very seriously.
In 2021, I turned professional at age 27. I stayed disciplined and kept believing that God had a plan for me. Although I wasn’t physically altered from the accident I was spiritually transformed.
So many more stories to tell about how I came from that to now, at 32 years old, I hold five professional titles and I’m ranked in the WBA world rankings. But still doing my thing and grinding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
