Monique Fisher’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

Monique Fisher shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Monique, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
That it’s easy. I’m an author. I write sweet and sexy rom-coms featuring Black lead characters and there are a lot of folks out there that think writing is easy. It’s not. It’s rewarding and there’s nothing else in the world I want to spend my time doing as a career but it is not easy.

Everything from marketing and promotion to actually sitting down and writing, it’s all challenging.

I think the belief of an easy ride is the reason AI has become so prevalent in creative spaces. People want shortcuts but there are none. If you want to be a writer, you have to write. If you want to write a specific genre like comedy, you must study it. Point, blank, period.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a romance author who is a theatre and comic book geek.

I specifically write modern, fun, real-life romances set in cities and small towns featuring a diverse cast of big-hearted, lovable characters.

I have written and released seven books including five which serve as the introduction to her MRCU (Mo’s Rom-Com Universe).

My eighth and ninth book are coming out November 2025. I live in Los Angeles with my two boys Michael and Alexander and my canine babies Abraham aka Hammy and Maya aka Pie.

My dream is to write full time without the aid of a nine to five. Fingers crossed!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I’m not smart. I had very low self-esteem as a child. And honestly it’s still something that I struggle with but I am in a much better place than I was decades ago. I truly believed I wasn’t intelligent. Thankfully, I no longer feel that way but it’s been a battle to get here.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’m a nice person. I try my best to go out of my way to make people feel seen and heard.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yep. I couldn’t be fake if I tried. Frankly, pretending to be someone I’m not sounds exhausting.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What false labels are you still carrying?
Imposter syndrome. I often have to remind myself that I have written nine books in three years. I have a catalogue and readers who have referred to me as one of their favorite authors. Whenever I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing, I have to remind myself that there are people who would argue that I do.
