We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shanny. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Shanny, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I am chasing greatness. I’m chasing the California Bar exam to become a California licensed attorney. I am chasing the glory of accomplishing a triathlon. I am chasing movie roles. As of now I graduated law school, ran the La marathon, and just starred in a tv show syndicated by FOX. I am close to my goals and if I were to stop I would lose purpose and meaning in my life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My names Shanny and I’m a renaissance man. I do a bit of everything; including music, running marathons, studying law as a soon to be attorney, and an actor. Currently I’m working on passing the California bar exam and building my law practice. My story is being the first generation child of immigrant parents and being the first one out of both of them to graduate college. I don’t come from wealth, I come from pain and struggle. In that sense I’m fortunate to be forged by adversity because it makes me more ambitious.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Losing $100k because it taught me a lot of life lessons. I learned not to confuse my identity with money because man makes the money, the money doesn’t make the man. It also humbled me and changed the way I interacted with others. Having 100,000 at 23 made me act pompous and feel like I was superior than others. Once I lost that money I realized that I’m the same as everyone else and just because I have a little bit of money in my wallet doesn’t make me better in any way.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you mindset, endurance, and what you are really made of. Are you going to go to fetal position and cry, or are you going to do something about it? Suffering gives you perspective.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Marcus Aurelius’s views on stoicism. You can’t control the things around you, but you can control how you react to them.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That I was naturally gifted and had everything handed to me. When in reality I worked my butt off to get this point. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. This has been the story of my life because I have always been the underdog and I’ve always had to work hard to get ahead in life.
