Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Pleasant-Ruiz.
Hi Ana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started with a deep desire to help people who often get overlooked individuals experiencing homelessness, struggling with mental health, or rebuilding their lives. Over ten years ago, I began working hands-on in the field, providing housing and residential services for clients with serious behavioral health conditions. Those early experiences opened my eyes to how complex, but also how powerful, consistent care and compassion can be.
That passion led me to start Pleasant Beginnings Foundation, a home care and housing support agency built on empathy, accountability, and genuine connection. We began small, helping clients with daily living tasks, but quickly grew into a multidisciplinary team providing intensive case management, housing navigation, and stability services. Our goal has always been not just to house people, but to help them stay housed and become independent.
What makes our story special is that we never lost our “heart.” We treat every client like family, advocate for them through systems that can be discouraging, and celebrate every milestone ,from getting their first set of keys to reuniting with loved ones.
Today, we’re proud to partner with county programs, hospitals, and community providers to bridge the gap between homelessness and stability. It’s been a journey of growth, challenges, and a lot of learning, but every success story reminds me why I started in the first place: to create pleasant new beginnings for people who deserve a second chance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped who I am and how Pleasant Beginnings operates today. When I first started, I was doing everything myself and my husband, managing clients, coordinating care, training staff, and handling the administrative side. Balancing compassion with compliance was a huge learning curve.
One of the biggest struggles was earning trust both from the clients we serve and from the systems we work within. Many of our members have experienced trauma, homelessness, or years of being let down by services, so building that trust takes patience and consistency. On the other side, navigating contracts, county requirements, and constant policy changes has required persistence and adaptability.
Funding and staffing were also major hurdles. It’s not easy finding people who have both the heart and the discipline to do this work. There were times I had to personally step in to make sure clients were cared for or that a program kept running smoothly. But each setback taught me to build better systems, strengthen partnerships, and lead with empathy.
Today, those early struggles became our foundation. They taught me resilience, problem-solving, and the importance of never losing sight of why we do this to provide stability, dignity, and hope to people who need it most.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Pleasant Beginnings Foundation, our work focuses on helping individuals experiencing homelessness or facing behavioral health challenges find stability and independence. We specialize in housing support, intensive case management, and home care services — guiding clients from the moment they’re unhoused all the way through maintaining permanent housing.
What we’re known for is our hands-on, human approach. We don’t just provide services — we build relationships. Every client receives individualized support that addresses their specific barriers, whether it’s mental health treatment, substance use recovery, or simply learning daily living skills to maintain a stable home.
But one thing that truly sets us apart is that we take care of our staff just as much as we take care of our clients. I strongly believe that the quality of care starts with the people providing it. We invest in training, emotional support, and recognition for our team because when our staff feel valued and supported, they give their best to the people we serve.
I’m most proud of the impact we’ve made — watching clients move from shelters or hospitals into homes of their own, reconnect with family, or simply smile again after years of instability. Every success story, no matter how small, is proof that compassionate, consistent care changes lives.
What makes Pleasant Beginnings different is our heart. We treat our members and staff like family, and we stand by our name — every day is an opportunity for a new, pleasant beginning.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor or building a strong network is one of the most important parts of growing — not just in business, but personally. My best advice is to be intentional and authentic. Don’t look for titles — look for people who inspire you, challenge you, and have already walked the path you’re trying to take.
For me, mentorship hasn’t always come from one person. I’ve learned from different people along the way — other agency owners, county partners, and even staff members who’ve shown me new perspectives. I’ve learned to listen, stay humble, and be open to feedback, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Networking has also been key. What’s worked best for me is showing up and serving first — attending community meetings, collaborating on projects, and building relationships based on trust and consistency rather than self-interest. People remember how you make them feel and how dependable you are.
Another thing I’ve learned is that mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. Sometimes it’s that one conversation with someone who believes in you that shifts your mindset.
Most importantly, become the mentor you once needed. As my business grew, I made it a priority to mentor my staff and help them develop leadership skills. I believe that when you lift others, you build a stronger, more compassionate network that naturally attracts the right opportunities and people.
