Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyth Mogan.
Kenyth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised on the prairie in north-eastern Montana. I came to Los Angeles the day I finished my last college class – I didn’t even stay to walk for graduation. It was a week or so after my first book The Phoenix Chronicles: Awakenings was published, and I was eager to see what doors I could open in Los Angles. There was some interest in adapting the book into a series, but being as inexperienced, I was kind of taken advantage of by the publisher and a lot of deals (and money) fell through – which turned me off to that world for a long time.
But, I’m never one to stay down for long and I shifted gears toward music.
My debut EP Fall Apart came out in 2013 and then my music video “Unlock Your Heart” went viral two years later. I continued to do music until the pandemic hit, and the entire world came to a stop. But, then I fell down the rabbit hole that is the Thai BL (Boys’ Love) genre of television with series like “Dark Blue Kiss” and “1000 Stars” – which intern led me toward Japanese series and discovering the Wonderland of STARTO ENTERTAINMENT and this entire genre of music I’d never explored before – J-pop, with artists like Travis Japan and SixTONES.
The music was so uplifting and inspiring that it got my creativity flowing, and after a nearly 17 year break I started writing fiction again. They were so important to my process that My Dead Boyfriend is actually dedicated to Travis Japan.
II signed with the boutique publisher Digital Fabulist in early 2025 and my first novel with them My Dead Boyfriend was released on 25 October 2024. It’s the first in a trilogy, and a part of the “My Supernatural Romance” series that includes my next book – My Super Fiancé – which will come out later this fall (also with digital fabulists).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being the only “out” gay kid in my glass wasn’t easy – especially as a 15 year old, surrounded by cowboys. I come from a very conservative family, and that caused a lot wounds I’m still working on healing today. Luckily, I had a REALLY good group of friends, who helped make sure I was always safe and knew I was loved. I’m still close to them today.
I entered the queer music scene just as it was really getting started. Artists like Jim Verraros had really paved the way for artists like myself. He’s a great guy and was so kind and encouraging. I also had Alexis Arquette looking out for me. Alexis was a spitfire and one of the greatest people I’ve ever met. Alexis really stepped in and saved my ass a few times – especially when it came to the seedier side of Hollywood. They always made sure I knew who really genuinely wanted to help me and who just wanted to get me into their bed.
I was working on my debut album when the pandemic it. I’d signed a licensing agreement with Hasbro and had been given permission to use the property Jem and the Holograms in the promotion of the project. But, then as the world shut down, the entire project was shelved. I was heartbroken, but in hindsight, others lost so much more than I did and being quarantined gave me the opportunity to shift again – and I really feel like I’m back on the right road.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I guess if I’m known for something it’s my songs “Unlock Your Heart” and “It Was Love” – both of which did really well for me in terms of stream and even on radio. I’ve done a few bit parts in television and film, but acting really wasn’t my thing.
I think I’m most proud of my writing now.
My Dead Boyfriend has been such a wonderful experience and with My Super Fiancé, I’m exploring ways to combined my love of writing with my love o music. Not only am I working with an incredibly talented visual artist from Mexico named UmiRage, the book will also be accompanied by a soundtrack. There will be several pop tracks and score pieces that have really made this entire process really unique and fun.
It’s also allowed me to reunited me with some of my favorite artists like A’me Lorain who’s song “Follow My Heartbeat” literally saved my life and Brendan Velasquez who I recorded a duet with on my 2020 album Star Stealer. Mek Jirakit, who is an idol in Thailand – and one of the stars of “Dark Blue Kiss” sings the Thai “theme song” to the novel “รักว้าวุ่น: – which basically translates to “Love Chaos” or “Love is confusing.” He’s an incredibly human being and I’m so grateful that he (and all the artists I’m working with) agreed to be on the OST. There are a few more artists I’m REALLY excited about, but we haven’t quite finished the contracts yet, so I’ll keep their names close to the vest. But, I can promise that it’s going to be OUTRAGEOUS!
“Episode 0” of My Super Fiancé is out now on my publishers Substack – https://substack.com/home/post/p-166936993 along with the first OST song “We Are Magic” which is on streaming and digital distribution platforms.
Any big plans?
The release of My Super Fiancé, will be followed by the sequel to My Dead Boyfriend – and then a third book for each. I’m headed for my 3rd trip to Japan early next year which I am really excited about. I’d love to live in Tokyo. It’s a magical city – filled with some of the most kind and creative people I’ve ever met.
