Today we’d like to introduce you to Andie Arbo.
Hi Andie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to LA from Virginia in 2014 to pursue a dance career. I had dreamed of working in music videos but had no exposure to the film industry until dance provided me with those first few set experiences. I fell in love with filmmaking immediately and although I loved dancing in music videos, I knew I wanted to be more creatively involved. I quickly transitioned out of dance and into crew positions. Now 10 years later, I do a combination of art department and directing (sometimes on the same project) and most of my work is in music videos!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I really struggled with the idea of leaving dance. It was the career I had spent my whole childhood preparing for and I had moved across the country in pursuit of it. I had an acting teacher (Crista Flanagan) kind of give me permission to take the leap. She could see that I was unhappy and basically just gave me the validation that it was okay to try something else. I had already felt the disconnect internally, but I think having a trusted adult/mentor validate those feelings was really necessary and freeing!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think I’m mostly known as a fabricator and for my art department work. Even in the work I direct, I keep myself as involved in art department as possible and I think my directing work shines because of it. I am able to execute concepts that I often wouldn’t have the budget to outsource.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am building out my new workshop in North Hollywood and I’m working on the screenplay for my first feature!
