Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Nick Mason

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nick Mason. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Nick, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I got back into playing Ice Hockey a few years ago. I really needed an activity outside of my work that was completely different. Not related to anything I was currently involved with, where I could shut my brain off for a few hours and focus on anything else.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a professional musician. I work mostly freelance as a hired gun drummer, touring and recording for a wide variety of artists across many different genres. I also teach private lessons, and have been doing so for 25 years.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I’d have to say it was a combination of my family and music teachers. The different music teachers I had over the years didn’t just show me how to play my instrument, they also gave me a sense of what the real world expectations would be in the music industry. Combine with the strong work ethic members of my family have, I was able to meld them together as I navigated my career.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No. Everyone has moments of doubt. I have frustrations, I have moments where I need to walk away. Those moments are always fleeting and never last long. I have never in my life ever considered walking away. Not even on a temporary hiatus.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d like to think so. I don’t really have any reason to put on a show, or hide who I am. Sure, there are things about me or my life that I don’t broadcast on social media, or in public, but all anyone has to do is ask me. I try to be very honest.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
All the time. I am always looking for the next achievement, to climb the next rung on the ladder. I’ve had many goals over the years, and have been fortunate to accomplish the vast majority of them. Perform for sold out crowds at arenas, grace stages my hero’s have stepped foot on, traveled to far away countries. None of them have been enough for me to hang my hat on and say, “Okay, that’s done now.” Instead I say “let’s do this again!”
