Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Scott.
Hi Kelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Tanzania, East Africa, and have called the USA home for the past ten years. My journey into caregiving began as a nanny, where I had the privilege of supporting families through the early years of parenthood. That experience, combined with my own cultural values around family and care, inspired me to certify as a postpartum doula. My work, along with the influence of my husband—who is a chef—sparked my passion for postpartum cooking and care. I believe that nourishing food, rest, and compassionate support are essential in helping new parents feel cared for and deeply held during the postpartum transition. I started The Postpartum Chef after the birth of my own son and the response has been overwhelming.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part is most definitely believing in yourself, quitting the 9-5 corporate style job and finding the patience and perseverance to start your dream business. I had big ideas about what I wanted to create, but turning this into something tangible meant facing a steep learning curve. Having the confidence to step into the role of entrepreneur and business owner as opposed to saying “I am just a stay at home mom”. It is a whole identity shift I am still growing with. Once the business idea and recipes were developed I figured the hard part was done, but we were only just beginning! Managing finances, figuring out marketing tactics, social media and sourcing ingredients have all been areas with struggle. There were entire months without orders, self doubt most definitely crept in, but I realized that perseverance and adaptability were just as important as passion.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Postpartum Chef ?
The Postpartum Chef provides holistic postpartum support for new parents in the South Bay and surrounding Los Angeles areas. I offer nourishing, chef-inspired meals that are always organic and prepared fresh. My services are designed to help families rest, recover, and feel deeply cared for during the postpartum transition. A variety of à la carte options and packages are available to meet each family’s unique needs, ensuring support that is both flexible and comprehensive.
This work was inspired by my own postpartum experience—specifically the bland, beige hospital meals that too often define the standard of care for new mothers. I knew there had to be a better way. I draw on ancient traditions of postpartum healing, looking to Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine to guide my recipes. Each meal incorporates intentional, nutrient-dense ingredients and herbs chosen to support lactation, promote healing from within, and deeply nourish new mothers.
Since launching The Postpartum Chef at the end of 2024, I’ve been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive and organic response from families. Almost every ingredient we use is organic, and everything is cooked fresh in my home kitchen—often with my toddler playing just a few steps away. I am proud to have built a thriving business that not only supports mothers in their most tender season, but also allows me to remain a full-time caregiver to my son. For me, family always comes first, and I am grateful to have created a path that honors both family and meaningful work.
A best selling profit that we are known for include a healing sipping broth made with organic chicken bones, feet as well as fresh herbs and vegetables.
What makes you happy?
I’ve realized that it is the small, mundane moments that really bring joy to my life. Going to the Riviera Village for coffee and a stroll along the beach, Sunday family dinners, and the simple comfort of slowing down all remind me of what truly matters. Happiness for me also comes from being a mother—watching my son grow, seeing the world through his eyes, and sharing in his curiosity and laughter brings a joy unlike any other. I find fulfillment in being authentic and living in alignment with my values, while also seeking adventure through travel and discovering new cultures. Ultimately, it’s the balance of everyday rituals, meaningful adventures, and the love I share with my family that fills me with a deep sense of gratitude and contentment.
