Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Truong.
Tony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Vietnam and raised in the San Gabriel Valley since the age of 2, the youngest of ten children in a family of immigrant parents. Life wasn’t easy, with so many of us under one roof and very little space, struggles at home often spilled into my life outside. In school, I got into constant trouble, fighting, facing suspensions, and eventually being expelled. By my sophomore year, I dropped out of high school.
At 15, I found my first job in a mechanic shop doing basic tasks like oil changes and cleaning up after others. What started as menial work slowly became a turning point in my life. I worked my way through different parts of the automotive industry, learning auto body repair, wheel work, and eventually discovering auto detailing. At first, detailing was just another skill to pick up in the shop, but as I kept practicing, I realized it was something I truly enjoyed. It became more than just work, it became a passion.
Through years of hands-on experience, I not only developed a craft but also discovered discipline, resilience, and pride in hard work. The challenges I faced growing up like moving from place to place, losing friends along the way, and trying to figure out who I was without much guidance, it really has shaped me into who I am today. Auto detailing gave me a purpose and the drive to build something of my own.
Today, I carry that same determination with me every day. What started as a survival job at 15 has grown into a career I love, and a foundation I can keep building on, not just for myself, but for the people who matter most to me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been anything but smooth. Growing up, I dealt with instability at home and setbacks at school, plus failed friendships and relationships that made it hard to picture a future for myself. Even after I found my way into the automotive industry, I still faced long hours, low pay, and the reality of starting at the very bottom. While working part time jobs, I worked out of my parents garage for years, perfecting my craft.
Slowly, things began to change. I moved out on my own, found steady work, and eventually decided to open my own shop. Opening the shop was one of the hardest things I’ve done, it required every ounce of work, time, and money I had. There were countless late nights repainting, driving all over Southern California to pick up equipment and supplies, and difficult choices like selling my car, my motorcycle, and other personal items. I even took out loans to keep the dream alive.
When I finally had my grand opening in December 2022, I was full of excitement and hope for what came next. Then 3 weeks later, my mom passed away suddenly. I was only 32, and losing her hit me harder than I expected. All I wanted to do was to pay her back, give her the life she truly deserved. Make life easier for the all the trouble and pain I caused growing up. She was the person who always had my back, the person I worked to build something for, and for a while I honestly wanted to give up.
But every challenge taught me something. Looking back, those struggles gave me the resilience, patience, and work ethic I carry with me today. Without them, I wouldn’t be where and who I am today.
We’ve been impressed with SGV Luxurious Detail, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At SGV Luxurious Detail, we specialize in high-quality auto detailing with a focus on precision, care, and customer satisfaction. We’re not just about making cars look clean, we’re about restoring and protecting vehicles so that they look and feel their absolute best. We take pride in the little things: the flawless finish, the attention to detail, and the personal service we give every customer. Our goal is to provide a “luxurious” experience, not just for the car, but for the owner as well.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that SGV Luxurious Detail represents resilience and hard work. I built this business from the ground up, and every service we provide reflects that journey. Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to networking, I’ve found the auto detailing community online to be a great resource. I stay connected by engaging with others, supporting through likes and comments, sharing knowledge, and uplifting each other. We’re always putting each other on to the next best thing, whether it’s products, techniques, or ways to grow our businesses. For me, networking isn’t about competition; it’s about building relationships and helping each other level up.
My advise would be to stay active, be genuine, and give more than you expect to receive, people remember that.
