Life & Work with Serge Soussan of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serge Soussan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My Blankee Inc. started in Los Angeles over 20 years ago with one goal: to create the softest, safest, and most personal baby blankets for families. From the beginning, we set ourselves apart by using premium, hypoallergenic fabrics and crafting everything in-house from cutting and sewing to embroidery. That commitment allowed us to deliver unmatched quality and offer parents the option to personalize each blanket, turning a simple product into a cherished keepsake.

What makes our story unique is how our blankets have grown with the families who buy them. Many parents who first purchased a receiving blanket for their newborn later returned to buy larger stroller or crib blankets as their child grew. Over the years, some of those same families have come back again to order our twin and dorm-size blankets for their college students. My Blankee has become more than just a product — it’s a tradition, with children forming deep bonds with the comfort and softness of their blankets from infancy into adulthood.

Along the way, our reputation expanded beyond families and into the medical community. For more than two decades, we’ve proudly supplied fertility clinics and hospitals with tens of thousands of custom embroidered blankets, welcoming new lives into the world with comfort and care.

Today, My Blankee offers 10 blanket sizes and more than 30 colors, all available online at MyBlanke.com
. What began as a small workshop has grown into a trusted brand nationwide, but our mission remains the same: to provide comfort, luxury, and personalization in every blanket we create.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of our biggest ongoing challenges has been managing rising supplier and fabric costs. Over the years, material and production expenses have increased tremendously, but we’ve worked hard to keep our prices as steady as possible so families can continue to enjoy the same level of comfort and quality without the burden of major price jumps.

Another challenge has been staying true to our values of producing every blanket right here in the USA. While many competitors have moved their manufacturing overseas to cut costs, we’ve remained fully committed to making our blankets in Los Angeles. That choice means higher production expenses, but it also ensures we can oversee every step of the process, maintain exceptional quality, and support local jobs.

Balancing these realities — rising costs on one side and our dedication to affordable luxury and American craftsmanship on the other — has not been easy. But our promise has always been to put families first, and those commitments continue to guide every decision we make.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always seen myself first as a creative. My Blankee was born from that same artistic spirit — the desire to create something beautiful, lasting, and deeply personal. Designing blankets isn’t just about fabric and stitching for me, it’s about creating comfort and art that becomes woven into people’s lives. Every blanket is a canvas, and through colors, textures, and embroidery, we turn something practical into something emotional and meaningful.

As an artist, I draw inspiration from everyday life, from textures in nature to the warmth of family traditions. That creative perspective has guided everything I do at My Blankee — from fabric selection and color palettes to how we personalize each piece. It’s also shaped our philosophy: that a blanket can be more than an accessory. It can become part of someone’s story, from the first day a baby comes home to the day they leave for college.

My professional life has been about bridging artistry and business. While I’m deeply involved in operations, at the core I’m always creating — finding new ways to make something timeless, soft, and unique that families will treasure for years. For me, being both an entrepreneur and an artist means My Blankee is not just a business — it’s an extension of my creative work.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’ve always believed that staying creative and balanced requires constant inspiration. For me, that comes from a mix of practical tools and creative outlets. On the business side, I rely heavily on apps that keep me organized and connected — everything from design tools that let me play with colors and patterns, to simple productivity apps that keep our workflow on track.

Books have also played an important role in shaping how I think. I’m especially drawn to biographies and stories of entrepreneurs and artists who built something lasting out of a simple vision. They remind me that persistence and creativity often go hand in hand.

I also enjoy podcasts that explore creativity, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship. Hearing how others approach challenges, balance passion with business, and stay true to their values always inspires me to keep pushing forward. These resources don’t just help me at work — they help me stay grounded and motivated in life as a whole.
