Hi David, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: When was the last time you felt true joy?
It’s been so long since I felt true joy – or “true” anything – that if a chorus of angels descended upon my studio I would mistake them for building inspectors. I am removed from joy in favor of anxiety. Now, before you admonish my pessimism or pity my limitations, ask yourself which condition is more hospitable to prophecy? I would further posit that those who claim to be possessed by bliss are simply masters of the fine art of denial.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I assume your readers are all familiar with the Almighty. Well Yahweh and I are in the same business though with dramatically different objectives. While god obsessively creates, she also is fairly adept at destruction. I simply specialize on the making of things. You might be put off at first by my hubris but rest assured, my self-loathing more than compensates for my pomposity.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
The world never told me who I was. The world was too preoccupied with other things. Your questions suggest that you are well acquainted with the various post-modern cults of “personal development.” I respect that but confess, I don’t fully understand it. So before I was what I am today I was younger and didn’t have to micturate as frequently.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
What I miss most is the world before auto-tune. I miss tawdry storefronts, interesting litter, old people huddled on park benches feeding pigeons, Yiddish accents, delicious tomatoes, great movies, gloveless deli servers, and sincerity.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would confirm all my superstitions.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
According to the actuaries, there’s a good chance 10 years is about all I can expect. I’m considering, when I reach the final lap, to start smoking and eating cheeseburgers. At that point, there would be little to lose.
