Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I’m putting in a lot of effort to shop locally these days, and through the process, I’ve found unique products (and food!) I wouldn’t have discovered online. Shopping at locally owned businesses has also opened the door to great conversations with small business owners and nonprofits across Los Angeles. Over the past several months, I’ve found a new spot to buy local produce (The Original Farmers Market), unique gifts (LACMA and the Japanese American National Museum), and meet clients and friends for a delicious cup of coffee (Dialog Cafe and Urth Caffé).
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jonathan Ochart, and as the founder and CEO of The Postcard Agency, I lead a number of marketing and public relations projects for our clients from our headquarters in Beverly Hills, California.
Through our work, we enable our clients to maximize their schedules and budgets so they can accomplish everything on their checklists and bucket lists, such as building their businesses, advancing their careers, giving back to their communities and discovering new and exciting places.
While we work with clients across sectors—from nonprofits like the Museum Store Association to businesses like Pure for Men, Black Tap Anaheim, Propense.ai, SuperQueer and Here & Always—they all share a passion for cultivating memorable experiences and making a meaningful difference in their communities.
We’re honored to help them share their missions and stories with people around the globe.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
As the son of a U.S. Army soldier, I was fortunate to see much of the world at an early age. Moving to new cities and countries every few years introduced me to new people, places and cultures that shaped the way I saw the world and my place in it. When I moved to Germany for the first time, I learned that there are different ways of doing things—from speaking different languages to eating different foods I’d never seen or heard of before. Who knew pretzels could taste so good? Gaining these new perspectives taught me the value of approaching life from different angles. Instead of doing things the way everyone else did them, I learned that I could shake things up. Taking this path enabled me to start a business of my own, develop groundbreaking marketing and PR campaigns, and shine a much-deserved spotlight on my clients and the good work they’re doing in the world.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Be yourself! The traits that make you “different” now are the traits that will bring you success in the long run.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Do the right thing, no matter what. The good (or bad) you put in the world will come back to you tenfold.
Every detail matters. Cross every “t” and dot every “i.” Attention to detail is a lost art—and it can make or break a business.
Always spellcheck.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Lying under a tree at my favorite park in Rancho Palos Verdes, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Nature is my happy place, and spending time among flowers and trees recharges me better than any caffeinated beverage.
