Summer, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I believe that intelligence, energy, and integrity are all essential; however, integrity, I feel, is the foundation that makes intelligence and energy attainable. Being honest, whether it’s with yourself or another person, allows you to learn without feeling restricted and gives you the passion to keep uncovering the numerous layers of life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Summer Brennan, a 19-year-old Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and producer. My history with songwriting starts during the global pandemic. Being isolated, I utilized my time to start writing songs and learning the Logic Pro software. Through this pursuit, I wrote my first released original, Boy.
My music falls under the alternative pop singer-songwriter category. My major influences are Taylor Swift and Holly Humberstone. I aspire to emulate Taylor’s explicit storytelling and partake in the experimental production of Holly Humerstone’s new album, Paint My Bedroom Black.
One of my primary goals as an artist is to inspire and give my listeners a voice. I recently released my EP “Hell-Bent Teenage Girl,” which encapsulates my frustrations as a young woman. My songs explore relationships, insecurity, and the impact of global insecurities on my life. My song Billboard City, for instance, discusses not caring about society’s unrealistic lifestyle standards and celebrates one’s unapologetic authenticity. It is important that my music displays relatable and intense vulnerability, allowing my listeners to connect with me and be present in their emotions. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to showcase my new EP at the Napa Valley Music Festival BottleRock and open for Green Day, Sublime, and Remi Wolf.
I am currently working on new music to release this year, so stay tuned!!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Relationships are about showing up for one another. Showing up can be different things; sometimes it doesn’t even require going somewhere. Showing up for someone can look like staying on the phone with your friend for hours because they just needed to vent, or it could mean going to your friend’s house for dinner because they need someone to lean on. Bonds are like chains; they are built on little acts of compassion, and I think sometimes we get distracted by life and can forget to stay on the line one extra minute. No one is perfect, but having self-awareness can help preserve and strengthen many bonds between people.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain and started using it as power when I began songwriting. What I find most attractive about songwriting is that I can reflect on the parts of my life that I can not “talk through.” When I write, I sit on my bedroom floor, plug in my keyboard, play a chord progression, and hum melodies; then, I craft lyrics. Writing songs has helped me through the growing pains that come with adolescence and, ultimately, life.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire Taylor Swift for her character because she always acts selflessly. Taylor makes it a priority to uplift up-and-coming artists in this tight-knit industry and share the spotlight with those behind the scenes who make her touring possible. Her unwavering support and kindness are something I aim to emulate in my career.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I am spending time with my family. Being surrounded by loved ones has always put me at ease.
