Story & Lesson Highlights with Philesha Alise Stern of Los Alamitos

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Philesha Alise Stern. Check out our conversation below.

Philesha Alise, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Lately, I’ve felt the importance of educating professionals and clients about cosmetology and getting back to the basics of the field. There has been a heavy focus for the last few years, solely, on metrics and follower count. We need to get back to the fundamentals of hair care. I’ve been avoiding this role myself because imposter syndrome made me feel inadequate. But now that I am approaching 20 years in the field, I am certain that I more than qualified for educating the masses.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Philesha Alise and I’m the owner and master stylist of Boujee Curls salon. In our salon, we focus on the health of curly hair and best styling practices for achieving your hair goals. This year, I am branching out into education to teach stylists the basics of hair as well!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I grew up a pageant kid, acting and theatre were my life. I quickly noticed that we always had to be “put together” and polished. One day, during dress rehearsal, my hair tie popped and I panicked. Our director loved my curly fro and decided to allow me to wear my hair down and “wild” during my performance. I felt so free and powerful in that moment. I never forgot how special that moment was and truly led to my passion for hair

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, so many times! There have been many days that challenged me and pulled me so thin, I never thought I would recover. But when days are low, I look to God for answers. There are many reasons to be grateful for my success, even on the hard days, so when I’m feeling low, I always look for gratitude.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Family. I’m a wife and mother of three beautiful children. They are my entire world and I do it all for them.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying! I would spend each moment searching for joy. I would share the knowledge I have with anyone willing to listen. I would travel the world and try and experience new cultures. I would be bare foot in nature and sleep under the stars. I would make it the best 10 years anyone has lived
