Hi Rob , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Prayer, Coffee, Working out!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Rob Moss is musical artist with no boundaries or limitations. Born and raised in one of Americas music capitals Detroit Michigan, Rob has proven to be a force within the independent music community. With 8 music releases under his belt, consistency is the key to Rob’s success as an artist reminding himself to “Never stop creating” . Moving to Los Angeles was a breakthrough for Rob, as the vibrant city brought out even more passion. “Every day there is something or someone to be inspired by” Rob says of the amazing city. Of course it has not all been peaches in cream in the city of dreams. Countless struggles, rejection, and failures ultimately fueled his passion to become better. After releasing 3 Ep’s, in 2021 Rob released his debut full length effort “Project X” which became an immediate success on the iTunes R&B chart, peaking at the #2 position and remaining in the top 10 of the chart for several weeks. The project was a commercial and critical success, being cited as R&B highlight of several publications including “rapfest.com” and “musicxclusives.com”. Two years later Rob followed up with “Boss Show” which also peaked at #4 on the chart and spawned Rob’s most successful single to date “Ooh”. Rob has also developed a reputation as one of the most vibrant live performers in his generation, gracing legendary music venu’es like LA’s Whiskey A-go-go, and the legendary SOB’s in New York city. More important than the music itself, according to Rob is the message, the message of resilience, and never giving up is the main focus of the Rob Moss brand. Having released a new single “5 G’s N The Wood” Rob looks to break down a 4th wall with his next album, “I want it to be raw, with no barrier between me and the listener” , and the single while a departure from his signature sound still rings true with authenticity.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
Growing up in Detroit, music was inedibly a part of the culture. Attending a high school and college for performing arts, Rob credits his many music teachers and mentors for teaching him about the craft of music. Incredible musician friends like Rè Lxuise and Ted Park have showed Rob how navigate through the music industry as an independent artist.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Just as there are successes, there are equal parts (if not more) failure and rejection. The closest to giving up Rob ever got was after being eliminated from the final round of a competitive singing reality show, (rhymes with shameircan – fidol). “I thought my life was going to change” says Rob, as he progressed to final rounds and impressed producers with his talent and story. Things took a turn when judges opted for Rob to perform original material and the producers pushed for a more “rock” “edgy” sound to differentiate Rob. The judges saw through this and while they praised his original song, he was ultimately not chosen ro progress in the competition, as the judges saw through the inauthenticity of his rock inspired audition and encouraged Rob to trust his vision for original music. “That was the only time i thought about giving up. I was completely heart broken and cried for days”. The encouraging words of one of judges is the only thing that encouraged Rob enough to never give up and in this process, his breakthrough album “Project X” was created.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Authentic music, talent and performance is a cultural value we must protect at all times. We are living in a time of instant gratification and fast everything. Art and music is meant to be expressive, and sometimes we can get caught up in the “algorithm”. We can’t allow this to happen. Same thing for live performance, growing up we were exposed to so much greatness, but as time goes on we see that standard decline. This is something that Rob looks to prevent by presenting music that is heartfelt and real, along with performances that evoke strong emotions.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I am gone, i hope that my music tells a story of real life experiences captured through art. I hope that the message of resilience and strength is evident in my music career. While i can’t control what the story will be, I can only hope that it is inspiring to the next generation of artist, musicians and performers.
