We recently had the chance to connect with Curtis Chase and have shared our conversation below.
Curtis, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately I’ve started enjoying getting back into reading Fiction. I just finished Circe by Madeline Miller, I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson, and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Definitely recommend all three!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name’s Curtis Chase and I’m an actor, writer, and content creator. Right now, my original comedy videos have gotten over 300 million views and 100K followers across social media. You can check them out @dontdoitcurtis.
I’m also working on a short film, a feature film, and am auditioning for acting roles. Send a prayer out I actually book one soon 🙂
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
To be honest, the past few years I’ve been creating in a vacuum. I’ve pretty much been writing and ideating all of my videos and scripts by myself but I’m ready to create with other people! I’m moving into a house in LA with my best friend and the goal for this space is to be a creative hub. So I’m going to organize creative gatherings, have meetings with other content creators for my content, and collaborate with other artists. I have a gift to organize and connect people, so it’s time to create a community of dedicated artists. I’m excited for this next chapter and not feel so alone in my creating!
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I’ve been trying to achieve success on social media for about 3 years and only started seeing growth at the start of this year. The reason? Because I stopped trying to be like everyone else, actually started using my own authentic POV, and I drew from personal and painful experiences. This pain then morphed into a core truth that the viewer could also relate too. Which is kinda beautiful honestly, to have somewhere to put the pain into and that it could potentially help or entertain someone. It’s like that old saying “Use your broken heart and turn it into art!”
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I would say, and don’t kill me for saying this, I’m committed fully to the project of Curtis Chase. That is my actor/writer self and I’m committed to reaching people through my unique and honest artistic expression. My goal is to create a body of work that is so wholly original, so Curtis, absurd/satirical, and rooted in an authentic truth that resonates with people on the deepest human level. This will be through a variety of mediums: social media, film, tv, literature, even some new thing. Play and feeling deeply will always be at the core of it!
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I’d like to be known as someone who took risks and went there. Who was brave enough to be original in a world who wants you to be anything but. Who was so honest that it struck a chord in audiences deeply. And that I was someone who reminded us to be playful, be absurd, and try to actually enjoy life along the way. Never settle for anything less than your dream life!
