Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Wang.
Hi Wendy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember—starting classical piano at 3, singing in choirs through school, and falling even deeper for it after moving from Beijing to the Bay Area at 12. That’s when I picked up guitar, wrote my first song, and realized songwriting was my favorite way to express myself.
After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2023 with a double major in Songwriting and Professional Music (vocal performance), I moved to LA. Since then, I’ve been playing local shows, releasing music, and collaborating with incredible musicians.
Now I’m about to drop my debut album on 8/29—and I’m celebrating with my first headlining album release show!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles has been learning to believe in myself and my artistry. I’ve always been on the quieter, shy side, so deciding to step into the spotlight as an artist felt like a huge leap. In the beginning, I had intense stage fright.
On top of that, my family wasn’t exactly thrilled about me pursuing music. I had to trust my gut, and choose the path I knew I wanted in the end.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’d describe my sound as somewhere between lullaby indie pop and edgy alternative rock—melody-driven, story-focused, and often centered on topics people don’t talk about enough, like mental health.
What sets me apart in my genre is the way my brand, visuals, and artistry tie together with my love for animals. I have a lot of pets, and they’ve inspired a whole series of releases. Last year, I put out my second EP, songs inspired by my pets: vol. 1, and I plan to release new volumes.
In between my pet-themed projects, I also create albums that dive deep into my own life—like my upcoming release Forever High, which explores the desire to stay high on drugs, love, or fantasy as a way to escape the lows I experience living with BPD.
I’m also proud of the cinematic world I’ve built around my music. I’ve always loved all forms of art—fashion, film, and everything in between—so I bring those influences into my music videos and my everyday style. It’s all part of creating a visual universe that supports and deepens the songs.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Animals and nature make me feel the purest sense of love and calm—they ground me and remind me of what’s real. Traveling and adrenaline-filled activities do the opposite in the best way possible—they make me feel alive, present, and overflowing with emotion. I think I need both: the peace and the rush.
