Inspiring Conversations with Nadia Davari of Davari Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia Davari.

Hi Nadia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From Lab Coats to Legal Notes: How I Found My Way into Entertainment LawI’ve spent most of my life in Southern California, where everything hums with artistic energy. At UCLA, I was immersed in molecular and developmental biology and genetics, meticulously preparing for a career in medicine and the chance to make a tangible impact through science. That was my path—until my final year, when a growing curiosity about law and business led me to USC Gould School of Law. At USC, while working at an entertainment law firm and studying the business of entertainment at the Marshall School, I became increasingly drawn to the creators whose work resonates globally. I was especially drawn to the interplay of art, law, and strategy.Today, I’m dedicated to helping clients navigate the legal labyrinth. I understand how the legal side can feel overwhelming or inaccessible. I strive to be a trusted advisor and advocate—someone who listens carefully, communicates clearly, and empowers clients to protect their work.Speaking at universities, film festivals, and law schools, and teaching music law at the Los Angeles College of Music, I recognize
the impact clarifying complex legal issues can make. It’s deeply fulfilling to help creative professionals and innovators gain the legal clarity they need to confidently pursue their vision.I never expected to trade medicine for contract negotiations, but entertainment law is the perfect blend of analytical rigor and creative advocacy. Helping creators safeguard their work—be it a song, a screenplay, or against unauthorized AI-driven replication—is deeply rewarding.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most meaningful journeys, mine has had its share of bumps, pivots, and growing pains. A major challenge was having confidence in my decision to change paths.
I had invested years of energy into studying science and preparing for a medical career at UCLA, so stepping away felt like abandoning a path I was “raised for” and expected to follow. The pressure—both internal and external—to adhere to the safe, predictable route was immense. Choosing law, and then carving out a niche in the unpredictable world of entertainment law, demanded significant resilience. The realities of building a legal career in a competitive, relationship-driven industry soon followed. I had to continually prove myself—not only as a competent attorney but as someone who deeply understands the creative landscape and can advocate for artists with professionalism and empathy. Yet, I’ve come to see that every struggle has shaped how I serve my clients. I understand the weight of questioning one’s path, building something from the ground up, and safeguarding a vision within an often-overwhelming system. This perspective enables me to infuse my legal work with greater humanity and foster deeper, more meaningful connections with those I represent.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It’s a question I often ponder, and looking back, I’m happy to share insights I wish I had known when I began.
Embrace Flexibility: Don’t be afraid to change direction, even if it feels like stepping off a predetermined course. Your instincts can steer you toward a meaningful career—what feels like a detour now may open unexpected doors. While the gravitational pull of conventional paths is strong, genuine evolution often thrives in uncharted territory. I certainly wish I’d heeded my instincts sooner and with less hesitation.
Prioritize Relationships:
In a world increasingly shaped by technology and AI, technical prowess alone won’t suffice within competitive, relationship-driven fields. Strength lies in building trust, fostering
genuine connection, understanding challenges, and showing empathy.
I’ve found that a nuanced appreciation for the creative process and the human challenges within it proved indispensable.
Challenges are Strengths: Anticipate late hours, tough lessons, and moments of uncertainty. These aren’t setbacks or deterrents—they’re formative moments that forge profound resilience. Every challenge confronted, every moment of self-questioning, refines your perspective. This hard-won perspective enables a more authentic and empathetic presence for colleagues, and collaborators alike—a quality I treasure.
Relationships are Capital:
From the outset of your career, particularly in fields like entertainment, prioritize cultivating authentic relationships over purely transactional ones. This industry runs on trust, and that trust is earned through consistent professionalism, genuine empathy, and a nuanced understanding of those you engage with. These bonds often lead to enduring partnerships and opportunities, proving their enduring value.
Protect Your Creations:
Proactively securing your intellectual property—copyrights and trademarks— early on and before widespread dissemination is a vital step to prevent future legal headaches and significant complications.
Seek Guidance:
Actively seek guidance from and connect with seasoned professionals. Engaging with experienced mentors, whether through industry events or trusted advisors, can unlock invaluable opportunities, knowledge, and insights.
Start Smart, Plan for Growth:
Start with projects you can manage yet ensure your foundational agreements are adaptable and flexible to support expansion as your work and ventures evolve.
Lean on Experts:
Navigating intricate fields doesn’t mean going it solo. Specialized support can simplify processes, reduce risks, and give you confidence as you move forward.
Ultimately, the path may rarely be linear, but it is precisely these challenges and shifts that imbue you with the unique perspective and profound insights needed to excel.
