Community Highlights: Meet Nina Camp0s of Shape of Sugar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Camp0s.

Hi Nina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Whittier and studied film in college while working in the restaurant industry. At the end of 2019, I discovered sugaring and fell in love with the craft— I was drawn to its clean, natural, and eco-conscious approach. Inspired, I decided to earn my esthetician license in 2020.

Of course, we all know how 2020 unfolded. Breaking into the beauty industry during a time of social distancing wasn’t easy, but I didn’t let it stop me. I practiced on myself and on supportive friends and family; bless them for being my willing guinea pigs!

Once restrictions lifted, I began working as a sugarist in Manhattan Beach. Soon after, I took a leap and opened my own studio in LA’s Arts District. Though that venture was short-lived, it taught me invaluable lessons and gave me the confidence to grow.

Today, I’m grateful to have found a beautiful space inside Citizen Skin in West LA’s Mar Vista neighborhood, where I’ve built my own clientele and become part of a vibrant community. I’m proud to say I’ve mastered sugaring and expanded my offerings to include lash lifts and brow laminations — and I’m excited to keep growing from here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d be lying if I said the road was smooth— building a business in the middle of a pandemic, while facing the challenges of city life, was anything but easy. As an esthetician, you quickly see how competitive this industry can be. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison, but I’ve learned that focusing on what I love and building genuine connections makes all the difference.

Balancing work with the curveballs life throws at you is never simple, and the service industry comes with its share of highs and lows. But over time, I’ve learned to adapt, stay open-minded, and keep moving forward no matter what comes my way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Shape of Sugar is a safe, welcoming space to treat yourself. Whether you’re getting rid of unwanted hair with sugaring or enhancing your natural features with a brow lamination or a lash lift and tint. I’m passionate about creating a moment for my clients to pause and do something that makes them feel good.

What sets me apart is my sugaring technique: it’s fast, precise, and as painless as possible. You’ll walk out smooth, with fresh brows and lashes that look effortlessly snatched— and hopefully feeling a little more like your best self.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice for finding mentorship is simple: don’t be afraid to shoot your shot. Reach out to people in the industry you admire. Whether that’s someone you’ve seen in person or connected with online. Social media is an amazing tool if you use it to learn from others’ shared experiences and build real connections.

I was lucky enough to meet someone already established in the industry who took the time to help me perfect my sugaring technique and share her own insights. That kind of guidance is priceless. As cheesy as it sounds, we really do hold the power to achieve anything we set our minds to— So put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to ask for it.
