Today we’d like to introduce you to Waldo Witt.
Hi Waldo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Houston, TX, and studied music from a pretty young age. I was always playing in bands growing up, and was pretty sure that I wanted to play music for my whole life from the beginning. I moved to Austin for college as a music major studying classical organ. That degree didn’t totally pan out, but I did start playing in a lot of bands in Austin, which is where I really consider that I got my start in indie music. After about a decade there playing and touring, engineering and recording, and doing the thing, my band at the time broke up and I moved with my wife to Chapel Hill, NC, where she was getting her Doctorate. This is when I started my current Waldo Witt project, releasing my first EP, Randall, in 2018, followed by another EP and a full length.
We moved to LA about 2 years ago, and I have done my best to keep busy and write and record as much as possible. I’ve found Los Angeles to be a really great place to learn about songwriting, and a great place to meet and work with lots of talented, inspiring creatives. I feel like I’ve been really prolific over the past two years and I think a lot of that I owe to this city and those who call it home and who build a sense community out of the chaos.
I’m currently in the process of releasing a series of singles that were recorded over the last year, while at the same time writing and recording new material. Hope to have another full length ready at some point in the next year or so.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely feel like a late bloomer in a lot of ways when it comes to my writing. For the longest time I felt like I was kind of chasing a vibe, beating around the bush, rather than finding out what the heart of the song really ‘is’ and just honing in on that. I would end up overproducing a lot of my tracks, and to me they’re kind of unlistenable now. The last few years I’ve really gotten better at just keeping things simple, but it’s always still a challenge for me and it’s honestly still a bit of a rollercoaster every time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a songwriter, singer, keyboardist, and guitar player. I consider myself a writer first, performer second, but I love performing, whether it’s my own project or backing someone else. What makes me the most proud is releasing a song that I feel really strongly about and feel like we’ve done a good job in presenting the idea.
What sets me apart – well, I don’t know. Maybe the fact that I’m a little bit all over the place! I’ve done indie electro, bedroom pop, dark psych tunes, retro pop indie bits, I like a little bit of everything.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Don’t get in your own way.
