Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe.
Hi Gabe, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sure! I’m Dr. Gabe Ignacio, one of the co-founders of The Basketball Doctors. My journey started in the Bay Area, where I grew up playing basketball and golf. Like a lot of kids, I had dreams of making it big in sports, but I was also ultimately drawn to the “why” behind movement, health & wellness — how athletes train, recover, and stay healthy.
That curiosity eventually led me down the path of becoming a physical therapist. I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from USC and spent the first several years of my career working with athletes across all levels — from youth, high school and college to professional. Over time, I noticed that athletes and basketball players weren’t always getting care that really spoke to the unique demands of the game. That’s where the idea for The Basketball Doctors came from.
My friend, classmate, and business partner Dr. Marco Lopez and I launched The Basketball Doctors with a simple mission: to bridge the gap between rehab and performance for all athletes, specifically basketball players. We wanted to provide real, evidence- and clinical-based info that players could actually use — whether they were dealing with an injury, trying to improve their performance, or just looking to stay healthy long-term.
Today, we share our work through social media, online programs, and in-person care. It’s been amazing to see how much impact we’ve been able to make by simply showing up consistently and connecting with our community.
At the end of the day, I’m just grateful to be able to do something I’m passionate about every day — helping people move better, perform better, and ultimately ball for life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth or straight road — and honestly, I don’t think any meaningful journey ever is. Starting The Basketball Doctors came from a real place of passion, but passion doesn’t automatically mean success. One of the biggest challenges early on was just getting people to know who we are and understand why we were doing this. There wasn’t really a blueprint for what we were trying to build — a brand that combined sports rehab, education, and performance specifically for basketball athletes — so we had to create that lane ourselves.
Another challenge was time. When we first launched, both Marco and I were still working full-time jobs as physical therapists. So we were filming content before or after work, building the website on weekends, answering DMs and emails during lunch breaks — it was a grind. There were definitely moments of burnout, especially when we were putting in all this effort and not seeing results right away.
Then there’s the learning curve of running a business. As PTs, we’re trained to treat and care for people — not how to market, build systems, or handle logistics. We had to learn all of that on our own and reaching out to people who were willing to teach us: branding, content strategy, audience engagement, SEO, even just staying consistent with posting while running a clinic. Every mistake was a lesson.
But honestly, the struggles have shaped the brand. They forced us to be intentional, to adapt, and to stay connected to our “why.” The basketball community has been super supportive, and knowing that we’re helping athletes stay healthy and feel seen keeps us pushing forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Of course. So, The Basketball Doctors is a brand built by physical therapists who not only understand the science and biomechanics of the body, but also genuinely live basketball culture. We specialize in helping hoopers of all levels — from weekend warriors to pros — to move better, recover from injuries, level up their performance, and meet their goals.
Our core focus is providing high quality information and care for those seeking rehab and high-level performance. A lot of athletes feel like they’re either stuck in the clinic or thrown into performance training without a real plan. That’s where we come in. We offer a mix of educational content, online rehab and performance programs, and in-person care — all tailored specifically for the demands of basketball.
What really sets us apart is that everything we create is based on real evidence and real-world experience. We’re not guessing. We’ve worked with hundreds of basketball athletes over the years and know the common injuries, the rehab mistakes, and what athletes actually care about. Plus, we’re not afraid to meet people where they are — whether that’s on Instagram, YouTube, or in the training room.
Brand-wise, I think we’re most proud of how we’ve built a trusted name in a niche space. Athletes know that when they come to us, they’re going to get honest, useful, and individualized advice that actually works. No fluff, no gimmicks — just real strategies that help them get back on the court or stay there.
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to know, it’s that we’re here to support hoopers through every phase of their journey — whether you’re fresh off an injury, dealing with the grueling ACL rehab journey, trying to improve your lateral quickness, increase your vertical jump, or just want to stay healthy for the long haul. We’ve got plenty of free content, structured online programs, resources for both athletes and coaches, and in-person treatment/training. Everything we do is rooted in our passion for the game, community, and helping others.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’re just starting out, whether it’s building a brand, launching a business, or even starting to create content in your field, my biggest piece of advice is: start before you feel ready.
When we launched The Basketball Doctors, we didn’t have all the answers. We didn’t have the perfect logo, the most polished website, or a following. But we had a dream & a mission — and we started showing up consistently. That consistency, even when things weren’t perfect, is what made the difference.
I think people assume you need to know everything before you launch something — but the reality is, you learn by doing. Confidence comes after the reps, not before. You get better at content by posting. You get better at business by launching messy and refining as you go. If you wait for perfection, you’ll miss your window.
Also, expect to wear a lot of hats within your company. You’ll probably be the content creator, customer service rep, strategist, and intern all rolled into one. That’s part of the journey and process. The key is to keep learning, keep improving, and be willing to make mistakes…That’s how you grow.
And lastly, I wish someone told me earlier that the path is not linear. There are going to be slow months. content that flop. Launches that don’t hit. But if you stay connected to your mission, keep showing up and learning, momentum will come. You just have to outlast the frustrations and create your own opportunities or “luck”.
So yeah — start messy, be clear and intentional, and don’t stop when it gets hard because it will get hard. However, if you stick with it, that’s where the breakthroughs happen.
