Hidden Gems: Meet Collin Cobia of Studio Collin Cobia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Cobia.

Hi Collin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My practice is built around a theme of resilience. I grew up in coastal Florida – an area ravaged by hurricanes year over year – and I observed this destruction as a problem of design and construction methodology. Something that could be mitigated through thoughtful practice and research. Rather than seeking visual novelty or stylistic signature, I built a philosophy prioritizing permanence – and architectural expression that could deepen through time. I set a clear path from an early age to become an architect and influence the practice at large with this in mind. I studied at University of Florida and Harvard University and after working for several offices in New York – honing a technical design process – I recognized a gap in true construction experience that needed to be bridged. I partnered with a design – build company in Los Angeles almost a decade ago and developed a clear understanding of construction means and methods which would later deeply inform my own practice. Eventually I started my own architecture studio, met a client in Florida who shared this philosophy of building for permanence – and together we sought to build a home that could endure the destruction of hurricanes, corrosion of salt-laden air, the sweltering heat of the sun, and view the process of erosion as a narrative of becoming. This project catapulted the studio into the high-end residential space and one after another, we have earned commissions for projects that share this underlying sentiment. After the tragic LA fires, we have been uniquely positioned to help rebuild the city with a long view on the new residential landscape and how we can build a resilient future.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Obstacles are a necessary part of growth in any challenging pursuit. During my tenure at the design build company I abandoned the familiar space of an architecture practice for a field that was entirely new – managing construction sites, spending the majority of my time in field, and shifting my identity from architect to builder. It was a necessary transition to gain the knowledge of construction I needed to pursue my goals, but it was a challenging field that lacked the creative discipline I yearned for. When I started my architecture practice, I was alone – working from a small, isolated home office day-in and day-out designing and managing every aspect of my projects and business. It was a way-finding experience toward a goal that was clear, but a path that was obscured. I found my way through action and experience, mistakes and lessons, until I built a stable foundation from which to grow the practice, bring together a talented team, and commission and deliver meaningful projects.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We design architecture with endurance in mind — buildings that are not only beautiful on the day they’re finished, but that grow more meaningful with time. Our work is grounded in a belief that architecture should belong deeply to its place, to its climate, and to the people who inhabit it. We specialize in high-end residential design with a focus on elemental materials, site-specificity, and curating spaces for every behavior.

We’re known for homes that are quiet in their confidence — structures that embrace the rawness of their materials, the cycles of light and weather, and the long arc of time. Our projects are less about spectacle and more about atmosphere, alignment, and emotional resonance.

What sets us apart is our philosophical approach. We don’t follow trends — we follow truths. We design for the long now. Every detail, every joint, every void is considered not just for how it looks, but for how it will feel — and how it will endure. We believe restraint is a form of generosity. That time is the ultimate test. And that buildings should invite the elements in, not keep them out.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the clarity and consistency of our voice. Whether in clear and concise drawings, raw, authentic material palettes, or the way we deliver projects, our ethos is always present: clarity, substance, and endurance. Our body of work is tuned to its climate, changing daily, softening yearly, and enduring — always — as a quiet form of resistance against impermanence through graceful acceptance.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Clarity of vision and uncompromising integrity have been the cornerstones of my career. They’ve allowed me to build trust, lead with purpose, and consistently deliver my best work. I’ve dedicated myself to mastering all facets of design and construction, using that knowledge to craft architecture that is both meaningful and enduring. Most of our commissions come through referrals—from clients, partners, and peers—which I see as the highest compliment. I protect and grow that reputation through rigorous work, authenticity, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
