Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio De Miguel.
Sergio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sure! My journey in music started very early — I began studying classical piano at the age of three in a music school in my hometown (Vigo, Spain). When I was seven, I entered the local Conservatory, where I continued my training and eventually graduated at seventeen.
After that, I was fortunate to receive a full scholarship from the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, sponsored by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, which allowed me to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, I pursued a double major in Film Scoring and Jazz Piano Performance, and I graduated in 2023.
Following Berklee, I moved to Chicago to continue growing artistically and academically, earning an MFA in Music Composition for the Screen at Columbia College Chicago. I graduated in 2025, and shortly after, I relocated to Los Angeles to develop my career as a composer in the film and television industry — and to keep evolving as both a musician and pianist.
Throughout this journey, my focus has always been on storytelling through music, and I’m excited to keep building meaningful collaborations and contributing to projects that resonate emotionally with audiences.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s actually been a pretty smooth road overall. All the transitions in my life — from my hometown to Boston, then Chicago — felt very natural. This next step might be the first truly tough one, since I’m jumping straight into the LA industry. Up to now, I haven’t faced too many struggles, aside from being far from home for the past six years — that’s probably been the hardest part.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a composer and pianist whose background combines classical training, jazz, and a passion for musical storytelling. Currently, I’m focusing on composing for film and TV, crafting music that enhances the emotional impact of a story.
What sets me apart is my unique voice and musical identity, which blends elements from Galicia, Spain, and diverse cultures around the world—including Celtic music, Latin music, African rhythms, and contemporary styles. This fusion gives my work a distinct character that reflects both my roots and my global influences.
Alongside this, I have a strong technical foundation built over years of classical and jazz study, paired with an intuitive and expressive approach to composition. I pay close attention to the details, while always keeping in mind how the music connects with the audience on an emotional level.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I just moved in, so I’m still getting to know the city. What I like most so far is the energy and how active the creative community is — it feels like a great place for artists and musicians to connect and work.
As for what I like least, I’ve noticed that the traffic can be heavy, and things are spread out, so getting from place to place sometimes takes longer than expected. I’m excited to explore further and find the places that truly resonate with me.
