Check Out Alejandro Contreras’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Contreras.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a tattoo artist born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. After high school, I moved to Las Vegas where I started my tattoo career and really began sharpening my craft. Vegas taught me how to hustle, experiment, and explore different styles. Over the years, I pushed myself to master a wide range from bold traditional to anime, realism, and everything in between. I didn’t want to be just good at one thing, I wanted to become a well-rounded artist who could bring any vision to life.
Everything changed when my son was born.. I moved back to California to be closer to family and eventually opened my own shop, Velvet Rose Studio, in 2022. Building it from the ground up has been one of the toughest and most rewarding journeys of my life. I’ve faced loss, self-doubt, and real-life pressures but tattooing has always been the anchor that kept me going. It’s more than just ink for me,it’s connection, therapy, and art that speaks when words don’t. Velvet Rose represents that through every needle stroke.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! I started tattooing when i was 19 and definitely took a few years before clients and other artists started taking me seriously.
When i open up my studio years later we were having our daughter at the same time as building the studio so that alone was a wild challenge for me

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work spans across anime, realism, fine line, traditional, and full color, but what makes my style unique is how I blend styles with emotions.Every piece I do isn’t just a tattoo,it’s an experience. I design with intention, layering depth, texture, and love into the art so it hits harder than just surface level. Im proud that i never stopped tattooing , even when i saw friends take breaks throughout the years from mental breakdowns and struggles.
What separates me from the rest is my versatility and the way I connect with clients. I don’t just copy references,I build custom work that reflects people’s inner world. Whether it’s a nostalgic anime scene or a hyper detailed portrait, I bring it to life with precision and passion. Tattooing isn’t a trend to me it’s a craft I’ve devoted my life to evolving every single year.

How do you define success?
To me, success isn’t just about money or recognition. it’s about growth, alignment, and impact. It’s being able to wake up every day doing what I love, creating from the soul, providing for my kids, and knowing my work means something to the people who wear it. Success is pushing through pain, showing up even when it’s hard, and building something real out of nothing. It’s freedom, purpose, and staying true to who I am while evolving into who I’m meant to be.
