Today we’d like to introduce you to Macy Lucarelli and Dane Jordan.
Hi Macy and Dane, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Origin of The Plant Daddies
Like most wild ideas, The Plant Daddies started during a strange time—lockdown in Los Angeles. Dane and I were working out together in the Hollywood Bowl parking lot, using weights from the back of his car and talking about life, plants, and what was next. One day, I mentioned how there was a line wrapped around the block at the nursery I lived above—people were desperate to bring some life into their homes.
At the time, people were calling me the Plant Daddy because I had been planting passionfruit vines all over L.A. just for the love of it. Passionfruit is my favorite fruit, and I wanted it everywhere. I’d drive around taking pictures of the vines growing feet a day, watching the city slowly get covered in vines.
That day in the parking lot, Dane told me he was in the process of starting a plant business called Green Vibes Plants Co. I told him flat-out it was trash—and that we should start a business together and call it The Plant Daddies. The name stuck immediately, and the next day we went all in. We bought a bunch of plants, styled them up like we knew what we were doing, and sold them on Facebook Marketplace within a few days. Just like that, we realized we had something special.
From there, the brand took shape fast. We noticed that when we messaged influencers or celebrities on our new Instagram account, The Plant Daddies, nearly everyone responded. So we turned the whole thing into a game—reaching out to actresses, models, and influencers to offer them free plants in exchange for a photo tag. If they posted a picture with our plants, it was theirs to keep. Soon, our feed turned into a mix of beautiful women and statement plants—and people noticed. The energy was sexy, bold, and different. The brand exploded.
Today, we’re a full-fledged luxury plant design firm working with high-end clients across L.A. and Orange County. But we’ve never forgotten where we came from—parking lot workouts, passionfruit vines, and a wild idea that turned into a movement.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yes, very smooth and no, absolutely not. 😅 On one hand, everything we envisioned for this business has come to life. It’s been surreal—almost like we dreamt it and somehow made it real. But getting there has been nothing but challenge after challenge. As soon as we clear one hurdle, another one’s waiting for us. We’ve had to become professional problem solvers.
What we’ve come to realize is that we’re not just one business—we’re a dozen, all strapped to the same rocket. We’re a design studio, a construction company, a landscape firm, a nursery, a wholesaler, a retailer, an importer, a delivery and install service, a media brand, a tech platform, and a fashion company—just to name a few. Every piece has to fire in sync for this thing to fly.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think the most important thing I can say about us is that we are disruptors in the plant world. Naturally, we’ve done the opposite of what anyone else would do. Our aesthetic is extremely clean, dainty, and sculptural. We treat every single plant we get as a piece of art. If it’s not artistic, we pluck it, bend it, and plant it in a unique way to make it one of a kind. In a nutshell, we are interior plant designers/artists. We specialize in making unique plant art and placing it in unique spaces in people’s homes, patios, or yards. The thing that we are extremely proud of is that we came into a giant industry we knew little about and completely flipped it upside down on its head. What sets us apart is our ability to look at plants in a different light and continue to get creative and artistic with every piece we build.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We’re turning this industry into a competitive marketplace for unique plants. When we started, the rare specimens we were sourcing were everywhere—and cheap. Now? The exact opposite. Prices have skyrocketed, availability is tight, and other businesses are starting to catch on. It’s become a race to find and create the next big thing.
We expect the plant design space to get pretty crowded over the next five years. We’ve already seen massive shifts in the interior plant world recently, and we think the pace of change is only going to speed up. The key is staying creative, pushing boundaries, and staying ahead of the curve, just like we always have.
