Today we’d like to introduce you to Sion Kwak.
Sion, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up surrounded by tattoos. My mom was a tattoo artist, so I was naturally exposed to her work from an early age – it was just a part of everyday life. I didn’t always know I wanted to follow the same path, but at some point, I felt a strong pull to try it for myself. That curiosity sparked the beginning of my journey. Over time, I developed my own style, and now I’m happily creating and collaborating with others here in LA.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
On the surface, things may have seemed smooth, but internally, I often faced conflicts – big and small. There were times when I constantly questioned myself: ‘Am I doing well? Is this the right path for me?’ On top of that, there were real-world challenges too, like working abroad and dealing with visa issues. Still, I think I made it this far by holding onto one simple mindset: just keep going. Those experiences helped shape and strengthen who I am.
Above all, tattooing was always on my mind – sometimes, it felt like it was everything. I kept exploring new ideas, trying new things, and filling in the gaps by studying what I lacked. All those accumulated moments have made me who I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a tattoo artist based in LA, known for delicate linework and vibrant color expression. My style reinterprets traditional Korean motifs, elements from nature, and symbolic stories through a modern lens.
One of the achievements I’m most proud of is building trust with a diverse range of clients by deeply engaging with their stories and translating them into meaningful artwork. Working in the U.S. has allowed me to connect with people from various cultural backgrounds, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how many are drawn to my detailed, Korean-inspired style. It reassures me that I’m staying true to my roots while expanding my reach globally.
What sets my work apart is its focus on meaning and detail. Rather than simply creating something aesthetically pleasing, I strive to visualize memories and emotions with precision and care. For me, a tattoo is not just decoration – it’s a symbol that lives and evolves with the person over time. I approach every piece with sincerity, ensuring that it tells a story worth carrying.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I truly loved this work, and at some point, I gained the confidence that I could do it well. Of course, the journey wasn’t always easy, but I never felt that I was on the wrong path just because it was hard. In fact, those challenging moments made me stronger.
If you’re clear about what you want to do, I hope you won’t rush. Go at your own pace and keep going steadily. You’ll be surprised how many things naturally fall into place along the way.
