Life & Work with Jim Montes of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Montes.

Hi Jim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I believe my photography career began when I bought my first DSLR and film camera at around 15 years old. I’ve always been captivated by imagery, and as time passed, I quickly realized I wanted to pursue this professionally. My experience working in film as a production assistant, camera PA, and 2nd AC has opened up various opportunities, allowing me to meet many incredibly talented individuals. Growing up, my family wasn’t particularly invested in the creative scene, which made the industry feel a bit daunting at first. However, with time, I’ve become increasingly comfortable with my career path as I continue to learn more about myself. I believe that understanding who you are and what you want out of life is indispensable. While I am truly grateful for the people I’ve met and the projects I’ve been involved in, I still have a long way to go until I achieve what I desire. Nevertheless, I am exactly where I need to be.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Recently, I realized that what I seek in life does not follow a linear path. Comparing myself to others has often become a never-ending struggle that has defeated me in the past. Over time, I have learned the only thing I can do is act on my ideas. I have had a tendency to hold myself back and dismiss my own concepts, which leaves me feeling empty and stuck in the same place. This habit creates no room for growth, so I am constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the core of everything I do is photography. I primarily shoot film, but when I use digital, it’s typically in studio settings. Currently, I am known for my street photography and stills from sets I am fortunate enough to work on. A major goal of mine this year is to explore studio shoots further and begin to develop my own style. Instead of comparing myself to others, I find it more rewarding to focus on what I want an image to convey and how I can ingrain my emotional state into it. I believe that being genuine in all aspects of life, especially in photography, allows me to create images that carry emotional weight. I shoot because I love it, and if someone else enjoys my photos, that’s truly amazing.

How do you think about luck?
I feel there are a multitude of factors to be considered when reflecting on my current situation. Every decision I’ve ever made has led me to this point, and I am very grateful to just be here. No doubt, you need to actively be seeking opportunities and social settings. Right place right time I guess.
