Today we’d like to introduce you to Azul Towers.
Hi Azul, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am from a small town in Chihuahua called Juarez and lived there until I was about 3. Some of my earliest memories are of my family getting together and singing throughout the night. Much of my family sang or played instruments so music was integrated into almost every family gathering. When I moved to the states, the school I went to had talent shows so I immediately began singing onstage and falling in love with it. This also inspired me to start writing songs, although they were never released. In high school and college, music was a big part of my life, and I participated in several theatre productions throughout the years. I formed two bands and played with them at different bars and events throughout the city and surrounding cities almost every weekend. Eventually I left the theatre stage to start looking for other ways to pursue singing. I started off modeling and acting in local artist music videos and through this met more people in the music world. I came across a producer who offered to record one of my songs for free, and immediately I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue. I released my first single “Golden” in February 2023 and have consistently released music since then. I recently just released my second album “Blood on My Hands” which features a wide range of moods and genres. I listen to every type of music and hope to share this experience with my listeners. I currently do solo shows to showcase my music and am playing a festival in Mexico in my hometown Juarez this April.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road because I have had to battle with depression and PTSD. Some days it is hard to get out of bed to do anything. The music industry can also be a serious industry, where you have to prove yourself before anyone takes a second look at you. This has been especially hard because I do not fit into a box. My fashion aesthetic is dark and gothic with a touch of indie and baddie. My music is a kaleidoscope of dark pop, r&b, latin, industrial, indie, alternative, and soul. There are shows where I am the only singer in a lineup of rappers, or the only one singing over rhythmic beats while everyone has a ukelele in hand. Being independent with a broad niche makes it hard to climb up the ladder. If I wanted to be a professional jazz singer, I could dedicate all my time to performing in jazz clubs and promoting jazz. Same with r&b or reggaeton. But I love music too much to pick something, and luckily, there is not a label forcing me to choose. It is a bumpy road but music gets me through it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do outside of music?
I am currently in law school. I would like to be a policy or legislative lawyer because I believe that there are many situations in the world that may be able to be resolved with a little elbow grease. I have always loved school and learning and want to use my skills to help others. Law school is really demanding though, so it has been challenging to balance it with artistic work.
How do you think about happiness?
Music makes me happy. Prayer also helps because it is a strong form of meditation to release all worries. I also like to travel and explore new places, whether it be new countries or just hole in the walls in my own city. Being connected to the world is therapeutic.
