Today we’d like to introduce you to Keai “Lily” Guo
Hi Keai “Lily”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Keai “Lily” Guo, and I am a film student currently pursuing an MFA degree at the American Film Institute. I discovered my passion for filmmaking while studying at USC. I majored in Economics and minored in Cinematic Arts, and gradually realized that filmmaking was the life for me. Through film classes, internships, and personal projects, I recognized my passion to be a producer.
Actually, my interest in entertainment started at a very young age when my mom started to show me Hollywood movies, but the idea of pursuing it as a career always intimidated me. I believed that creative fields were too uncertain, so I initially chose a more traditional path by studying Economics. However, everything changed when I watched my sister pursue a career in music. Seeing her break free from the mindset that had once held me back inspired me to do the same. I finally allowed myself to follow my passion for filmmaking, and I haven’t looked back since. That’s why I always encourage people to follow their hearts — while the path may not always be straightforward, doing what truly fulfills you is worth the risk.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. Pursuing a creative career comes with uncertainty, self-doubt, and the constant challenge of proving yourself. Coming a little late to the game, I had to work twice as hard to gain hands-on experience. There were times when I questioned if I was on the right path, especially when facing rejections or feeling behind. Funding and work opportunities can also be competitive, making it difficult to bring creative visions to life. However, every challenge has pushed me to grow, adapt, and stay committed to my passion. The struggles have made every small victory — whether it’s completing a project, making meaningful connections, or seeing my work resonate with others — all the more rewarding!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a producer currently studying at the American Film Institute. Here I’m honing my skills in how to manage all aspects of film production. I bring a strong business acumen to my work, which allows me to bridge the gap between creative and financial elements, ensuring projects are both artistically fulfilling and financially viable.
I am most proud of my ability to collaborate with diverse teams and champion underrepresented voices in film. Growing up in Shanghai and now studying in Los Angeles, I have a global perspective that informs my storytelling. I commit to cultural authenticity and believe in the power of film to challenge perspectives and foster empathy. I strive to produce work that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level and leaves a lasting impact.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m always excited to collaborate with passionate storytellers. If you have a compelling story or a script that you believe deserves to be brought to life, I’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s developing a film, producing a project, or brainstorming ideas, I welcome opportunities to connect with like-minded creatives. Let’s create something meaningful together!
