Daily Inspiration: Meet Jim Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Green

Hi Jim, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began making visual art around the age of eight years old. For years, on and off, I attended different art schools where I learned how to dabble in traditional painting, I say dabble because up until the last four years, everything I created prior to that was practice. It wasn’t until I discovered that my personal style of painting is a perfect fit for making digital paintings on a computer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a little of both but then I can’t imagine any artist in any area of expertise or endeavor that hasn’t experienced a struggle in some form. I am no exception. I think that without at least a bit of a struggle, it makes the potential outcome more satisfying.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I began a series of digital paintings based on work I performed for the ASA (Army Security Agency) in Bavaria, Germany. There, I gathered intelligence sent by Eastern European agents to agents stationed throughout West Germany. Each message contained fragments of coded information which was then decoded to create a whole message.

Similarly, never having a picture in mind, I paint in a free association style, using personally coded fragments of imagery pulled from a variety of sources. Most are primarily chosen for their shapes and aesthetics which I edit until they all come together to form a complete visual and aesthetic narrative.

My intention is to create computer paintings that bring into question the value of digital mark making versus traditional painting, particularly at a time when so much art is being produced using today’s technological and printing processes. That includes the inkjet printer itself. In a sense, I see it as yet another tool, not unlike a paint brush or a computer mouse.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The integrity to resolve a work of art to its completion rather than abandon it.
